Shabbat Shalom! One of Ann Koffsky's new books is a cute book that takes place on Shabbat.
Fairy GodBubbie's Shabbat
Ann Koffsky
Shabbat is supposed to be a day of rest, separate from the busy week. But sometimes we need a gentle reminder to put down our screens and enjoy quiet time with our family. As any parent knows, sometimes Grandma will speak up and let them know when they could be doing things differently. So when a little magical intervention is needed, it is only appropriate that the Fairy Godbubbie pops in to make things right. She magically freezes the screens on all the devices and provides a proper Shabbat setting. The family gets their noses out of their screens and spend time talking to each other instead. They spend the Sabbath eating together, playing board games and enjoying nature. Koffsky sprinkles the text with Yiddish. I loved how the author used the words schmooze and kibitz in a positive manner to mean simply small talk. At first glance, this seems to be a book about keeping Shabbat, but the author is actually using Shabbat as a framework for a discussion on the topic of taking a Sabbath from screens and enjoying all the other things in life together as a family. The author's clever story and cute illustrations help youngster's learn this lesson. As a babysitting Bubbie who enforces limits on screentime, I loved sharing this cute story. My little one loved this and so will yours.
Fairy GodBubbie's Shabbat will be published Setember 9th from Intergalactic Afikoman
