14 years together (since 2011) · Secretly married 2016
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes had known each other casually for years before everything changed on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011. They were playing a couple struggling to build a life together — and quietly, that fiction became truth. Eva later said on The Kelly Clarkson Show: "That's literally me going, 'I'm not in love with him. I'm not in love with him.' Cause we were trying to be very professional." She was absolutely in love with him.
By September 2011 they were spotted hand in hand at Disneyland. By November they were celebrating Thanksgiving together in Paris, strolling through Père Lachaise Cemetery. No announcements. No press. Just two people falling, quietly and completely.
Ryan said it plainly in 2023: "I wasn't thinking about kids before I met her. But after I met Eva, I realized I just didn't want to have kids without her. There were moments on set where we were pretending to be a family — and I didn't want it to be pretend anymore."
They didn't want it to be pretend either. In September 2014, daughter Esmeralda Amada was born. Daughter Amada Lee followed in 2016. That same year, they quietly married — no announcement, no red carpet, no fanfare. The world only found out in 2022 when Eva debuted a tattoo on her wrist reading "de Gosling" — a nod to the Hispanic tradition of a wife taking her husband's name. She called their relationship status "mysterious." The tattoo said everything.
They live outside of Hollywood deliberately — away from the superficiality, away from the pressure. Eva never posts photos of Ryan or their daughters. "It's not about being cagey or weird," she wrote on Instagram. "It's just about staying private in a public space." Ryan stays home with the girls while Eva works. Eva cheers from the sidelines when Ryan does. In March 2026 they made their first official public appearance together in over ten years — on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon — and the internet lost its mind.
At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Ryan said in his acceptance speech: "I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children. I dreamed of one day making movies — and now movies have made my life a dream."
The only quality he looks for in a woman? "That she's Eva Mendes."
Secret: radical privacy, choosing family over fame, and a love so quiet and certain it needs no audience.
