Here is some information about Streaming royalties for Artists. You ask what is the best way to support musicians when it comes to streaming music. The basic answer is, using any platform you are comfortable with, go directly to the artists page, hit play and let it cycle through every song they have... and leave it running as often as you can!

If you want to take it to the next level and support the music streaming platforms that pay out independent artists the best, then here is a quick breakdown of the numbers as they exist today. I ranked them based on “best to worst” payouts. Keep in mind, most artists are on most platforms, but not all artists are on all platforms... so again, whatever you use is something!

1) Napster: $0.01682 per stream: artists need about 87,515 streams per month in order to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

2) Tidal (Jay Z’s platform): $0.0125 per stream: artists need about 117,760 streams per month to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

3) Apple Music: $0.00735 per stream: artists need about 200,272 streams per month to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

4) Google Play Music: $0.00676 per stream: artists need about 217,752 streams per month to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

5) Deezer: $0.0064 per stream: artists need about 230,000 streams per month to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

6) Spotify: $0.00437 per stream: artists need about 336,842 streams per month to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

7) Amazon: $0.00402 per stream: artists need about 366,169 per month to make the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

* Pandora (one of the worst for independent artists): $0.00133 per stream... artists need over 1.1 million streams per month to earn the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

**YouTube wins at (THE WORST PAYOUT FOR STREAMING INDEPENDENT ARTISTS): $0.00069 per stream... artists would need more than 2.1 million streams per month to earn the U.S. minimum wage of $1,472

I hope this information is useful; and thank you again for supporting your favorite artists during these trying times!

Sincerely,

Derek - DK-Zero🤘🏼

So sad to see another Seattle Music Scene Institution go down. Thanks for supporting live music Highway 99 Blues Club

This is a note that we used to think would someday have to be written; we were never quite sure of when, but it always seemed to be in the back of our minds.

By now maybe you have already heard, but if not, as of January 1st, 2019, we will be suspending operations at the club and closing our doors. We were not able to work out a manageable lease extension with our current landlord, and in light of the pending demolition of the viaduct, followed by a few years of construction on the waterfront, thought the unknown elements of the future to be just too much for the business to bear.

Thanks to all of you. We accomplished more than we thought at times possible. The awards we won, the friends we have made and the artists that we have brought to our stage, all seemed impossible when this started. None of this happened without the support of our fans. Thanks to all of you. For treating us and our staff with respect and friendship. Our staff makes this place what it is; their commitment to the vision of the club and the effort they put out night after night will always be what we and our customers remember.

The Blues Foundation presents the KEEPING THE BLUES ALIVE (KBA) awards to organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues world. In 2017, The Highway 99 Blues Club won this award. With over 200 shows a year presented in the club, the number of artists to have "Hit the Highway" is huge. They represent the best; collectively they have won Grammy's, BMA's, KBA's, and Best Of from their respective Blues Societies. Even Canada's Maple Blues Award. International, National, Regional, and local bands all brought their best to our stage.

We have had our favorite all time shows. We bet you do too. We were always about the music first. Unforgettable performances, surprise guests, bands and artists you had never heard of, styles of music you didn't know you liked. That's what makes a club special. They bring you the favorites along with the new stuff to get you excited about what you just heard.

We hope you get a chance to make one last visit before we go; sign the wall, talk to the staff, see one or all of the remaining shows.

It's been an amazing run. Your support for all these years is truly remarkable. We can't say thank you enough.

Ready, Fire – Aim!

I have worked with about a dozen artists over the last year more than just coaching them but doing the heavy lifting – product managing and marketing the release of recorded music and tours. What never ceases to amaze me is the myriad of things that many artists only remember about marketing and promotion after they have released an album. I realize there is less set up time required in the high paced digital world we live in but let’s not forget that there is in fact a need to have some setup before a release date so as not to be completely unprepared.

These are ideas that should be thought about before you have even entered the studio because what you capture about the process of making the record will serve you in the process of the set up and release of the record. One of the most important and noteworthy things a musician can do from a marketing and press standpoint is to release new material. This is one of the reasons many people advocate releasing singles or EPs vs. LPs. I’m an EP man myself – a single just feels too easy to divorce from the message and image of an artist as a whole but that’s probably a topic for another blog post at another time.

Try these:

1) Have a plan. Any plan is better than no plan. Start this plan the same day you say to yourself – “it’s time to go into the studio”. Physically write out this plan and make yourself a sketch of the next 3-6 months both during the making of and after the completion of the record. It had better be more than – “Let’s put it on Myspace!”. As hard as it is to not share your new creation with the world – hold off until you have a rollout strategy in place so you can maximize the impact of your new release.

2) Document the process of creation. Write about it (and I mean keep a full journal), take photos of it, take videos of you in the studio if you are lucky enough to have guests on your record that have a larger profile than you ask permission to get photos and video of them with you. Collect a few rough mixes and make sure you have instrumentals and TV tracks mastered for possible placements at a later date. Be sparing with what you release to your fan base during the creation phase – it may make sense to survey all this “making of” content so you can edit and meter it out in a way that keeps people talking about you and your new music that’s coming out.

3) Once the album and B-Roll footage are all assembled and edited – divide these items up into what is for sale and what is for promotional use and start thinking about where and when to place the promotional pieces leading up to release.

4) Speaking of where – get the url for your project name at myspace, facebook, twitter, youtube, flickr, ustream and sign up for a tubemogul account. Toy with synching these services together using artist data, ping.fm or other one off synching applications (Selective tweets, myspace-twitter, twitter-lnkedin etc). If you’re going to be in a learning curve or don’t have these items established do it with your catalog albums and merch – not the new stuff.

5) Like Physical CDs? No judgments here. They sure are easier to sign than digital downloads. Have them in hand a few months before the release date – some gatekeepers still like getting CDs in their hands.

I’ll be back soon with part 2 but consider items 1-5 as prerequisites to have checked off of your list before release. Above all – be patient!
