Since the removal the socialist regime (Derg) in 1991, the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has radically reformed Ethiopia’s political landscape. The regime has claimed to have transformed the hitherto centralized authoritarian state into the Federal democratic Republic and also redefined citizenship, politics and identity on the grounds of ethnicity. According to its sponsors and supporters, the said transition is a democratic reconstitution of the state and society by ending authoritarian rule and creating an ethnically egalitarian nation-state of equals.
