Life is full of hard lessons. I know it may not seem like it on the surface, but it’s been a tough 2 years for your favorite storytelling duo. In fact, the last two months have been a hyper combo of Capcom pixel punishing proportions with a Mortal Kombat fatality as the cherry on top. But just like any good video game, 80% has respawned, stronger, wiser and more determined than ever to continue telling OUR stories in OUR own way. The future is clearer than ever, and this path we have shoveled through the literal sh*t of the creative industry we’ve chosen is our lane to the next stage of evolution.
We follow in the footsteps of giants— not in size, but deeds. Two rebellious women, Katie and Patricia, who refused to do things as they were accepted and in the most punk rock way ever, gave the finger to tradition in order to ensure tradition would survive to the next generation and beyond. Because in Chickaloon, we dance how we want.
This torch we carry is not one handled lightly, though not because it is heavy, but because it is fragile. Like a match in the wind, the flame of creation must be stoked and protected at all costs by sharing it with as many people as we can, especially the younger generation.
It is this ‘boots on the ground’ environment that 80% truly shines. We returned to the Alaska State fair with the magical memory of our inaugural year etched in our minds. But like any relationship, the first date is sometimes misleading, and it is in the ability to collaborate and communicate that it endures. We shouted our stories far and wide, stories that came from the very land upon which we stood. Stories that are thousands of years old, empowered exponentially by every generation who shapes them and shares them through the lens of their own experiences.
At the end of the fair, despite the struggles, we emerged victorious. Not just in monetary or physical value, but in knowledge and understanding—the true currency of our world. We persevered against the endless wind tunnel of trials and tribulations—even when all the odds were stacked against us.
We claim no victimhood, no injustice, no trauma. We will never stop telling our stories to those who need to hear it, whether they realize it or not. The tangible connections have arose too often, with too many different people in too many different areas to think this doesn’t work. Chickaloonies is magic and we are determined to weave our spell with even greater intent.
Huge thanks to everyone who made this trip possible, supported us in not just getting a book, but helping us with travel, lodging, transportation. Katie, Jay, Carol, Doug, Mat, Jade, Alma, Leah—we are eternally in the debt of those who help us achieve our dreams and we will never forget that. Nor will we ever stop.
