News: End of Guillot v. Whitehead

“The plaintiffs in the Guillot v. Whitehead lawsuit announced their decision to settle the case on July 30. Following the settlement, all hearings surrounding the Board of Trustees’ recent actions at Seattle Pacific University will cease.

Rae Perez, a recent SPU alumni and a plaintiff in the case, was part of the decision to settle.

“Our plaintiff group started discussing the prospect of settlement quite a while ago,” Perez said. “The cost at this point has no chance of outweighing the benefit — not in a legal sense.”

Features: Moving forward with honor - “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” gives tribute to Boseman’s legacy to pave new path for Black Panther franchise

“In total, there have been 30 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not including the 12 shows that have premiered on Disney+. Many more are still on the way, making Marvel movies a staple in the cinematic world. However, despite the many Marvel films made, few have had such a difficult task as the latest installment.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is the latest MCU film and the sequel to 2018’s “Black Panther.” The film continues the story of the kingdom of Wakanda and the characters of the first film; however, its greatest purpose is moving the Black Panther legacy forward without the titular character.”

“Seattle Pacific University’s Board of Student Media consists of four student-run groups: The Falcon, KSPU, Lingua and Cascade. Cascade is SPU’s official yearbook, and this year I have the pleasure of being the editor-in-chief.

Cascade Yearbook has a long history at SPU, dating back to the early 1910s before SPU was even called Seattle Pacific University. Cascade has such a profound legacy and history within this institution.”

News: SPU combats budget deficit - The Seattle Pacific budget undergoes academic and administrative reform

“Seattle Pacific University is facing a budget deficit for the third year in a row, following the trend of many private institutions. The university is attempting to combat falling revenue with academic, administrative and budgetary reform.

Kim Sawers, vice president for business and finance at SPU, has been navigating the university’s decreasing revenue, which is largely impacted by decreasing enrollment.”

Sports: Seattle’s loss is California’s gain - Seattle Pacific athletics soon to lose two staff members

“After the conclusion of the Division II fall sports festival on Dec.3, Seattle Pacific University will say goodbye to two members of its athletics department: Jackson Stava, athletic director, and Shelby Steuve, associate athletic director for compliance and student success and senior woman administrator.

Stava has served as SPU’s athletic director since July 2016. While Stava is thrilled to have been a member of the SPU community, he saw an opportunity for his family to return home and another opportunity to advance his professional career. Stava will become the senior associate athletic director of California Polytechnical State University in San Louis Obispo, California.”

Features: Declaration of sanity - SPU Theatre’s production of “Mrs. Packard” tells story of inspirational woman fighting against unjust treatment

“Insanity. That is the issue that the jury must consider. Is the woman before them insane for sharing a different religious opinion than her husband, or is she sane and rational? That decision will only come after analyzing and dissecting the witnesses’ statements, evidence and a personal statement from the very woman on trial, Mrs. Elizabeth Packard.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, the Seattle Pacific University Theatre Department opened its season with a play by Emily Mann, “Mrs. Packard,” directed by SPU professor Dr. Andrew Ryder. The play depicts the heartbreaking story of Mrs. Packard, a historical woman from Illinois who fought to prove her sanity. She gained her freedom from the Jacksonville Asylum in the 1860s after being accused of insanity by her minister husband.”

To acknowledge the obvious, the recent Twitter outburst by Kanye West has garnered significant attention from the media, celebrities, companies, private organizations and many more. Yet, this piece is not meant to give more attention than necessary to one problematic celebrity. Instead, it is to remind us that these hateful remarks are only one example of how normal we have allowed antisemitism to become.”

“The 2022 midterm elections concluded on Nov. 8, with Congress seats, local offices and public policy on the ballot. Many students at Seattle Pacific University are first-time voters, and the national, statewide and local issues are being discussed thoroughly.

Nationally, both parties fought for control of the House of Representatives and Senate. Caleb Henry, a political science professor at SPU, predicted a Republican win.”

News: Facing students’ food insecurities - Food resources for struggling students available on and off campus

“For many college students, reliable sources of food can be a struggle. Fortunately, Seattle Pacific University is working towards providing resources for people to apply for meal swipes, discounts or even to-go meals.

Students living at SPU are required to choose a meal plan to keep them fed throughout the quarter. Options range from 75 meals to 200 meals, costing between $1,873 to $2,169 a quarter. Meal plans give students access to Gwinn Commons Dining Hall as well as funds to spend at dining locations around campus.”

Sports: Back on the court - Women’s basketball aims for the NCAA tournament as season approaches

“It’s been eight months since Seattle Pacific University’s women’s basketball team laced up for a game. Last spring, the team made it to the GNAC Tournament, beating Alaska Fairbanks but losing in the second round to Alaska Anchorage. Looking ahead, the team has lofty goals.

Redshirt freshman and exercise science major Makenna Jacklin recognizes the team’s strong improvement and unification after an off-season of hard work.”
