“Well, employees aren't loyal anymore.”

That's a common complaint.

But maybe the better question is:

“What are you doing to create loyalty?”

Strong teams don't happen by accident.

They happen when leaders invest in people, create trust, and build an environment where everyone is working toward the same goal.

Because loyalty isn't something you demand.

It's something you earn.

And if there's a problem in your business?

“Do something about it. Stop talking about it.”

Technology is changing the automotive industry, and AI is becoming a bigger part of the conversation. But as shops adopt new tools, one thing can't get lost: the human connection.

The advantage many independent shops have is the personal touch—the relationships built with customers, the trust, and the ability to make people feel cared for. Those are things that can't be replaced by a system alone.

AI can help improve efficiency, communication, and decision-making, but it should support the people in the business, not replace the relationships that make the business different.

The future of automotive won't just be about better technology. It will be about finding the balance between innovation and keeping the customer experience personal.

How do you think AI will change the way shops interact with customers?

A business that depends completely on one person isn't truly a business yet—it's a job with extra responsibility.

Many shop owners work nonstop because everything runs through them. They are the main salesperson, technician, decision-maker, and problem solver. But when life happens, the business struggles because there isn't a system or team in place to keep things moving.

The goal of building a business is not to make yourself impossible to replace. It's to create processes, develop people, and build a team that can succeed even when you step away.

A strong business gives you freedom. A business that can't operate without you can quickly become a burden.

If everything depends on you, it's time to start asking: are you building a business, or did you just create another job for yourself?

"Facebook is Toilet Content"

Social media has changed the way we consume content. A lot of people scroll through short videos simply to pass the time, even while sitting on the toilet. Which means creators and businesses are constantly competing for attention.

But behind every view is an opportunity to connect, educate, and provide value. The challenge is creating content that doesn't just get attention—it actually helps people, teaches something, or starts a meaningful conversation.

In today's world, attention is valuable. Whether you're a shop owner, technician, or industry professional, the way you communicate online can shape how people see your brand and your message.

The goal isn't just more views. The goal is making those views matter.

What do you think makes content actually valuable online?

Running an automotive business changes your perspective.

Many shop owners start with a mission to serve people, raise the standard, and create a better experience for every customer. But over time, the daily challenges of the industry can test that mindset.

The reality is that not every customer sees vehicle maintenance the same way. Some prioritize immediate wants over necessary repairs, even when those repairs impact safety and reliability. That’s where education and communication become so important.

Great shops don’t just fix cars—they help customers understand why proper maintenance matters. Building trust means showing people the value behind the recommendation and helping them make informed decisions.

The challenge is staying committed to doing the right thing, even when the process gets difficult. The best shops find a way to balance business, customer service, and safety without losing sight of why they started.

What do you think is the biggest challenge shop owners face when trying to educate customers?

🎙️ 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗦𝗢𝗗𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗢𝗨𝗧

“We got to start a business without a business plan.”

Think about that.

Most shop owners spend years learning how to repair vehicles.

But how much time do they spend learning how to run a business?

When challenges hit, many realize they weren't nearly as prepared as they thought.

“Oh man, I was not as prepared as I should have been.”

Understanding your market.
Planning for the what-ifs.
Learning the business side of the industry.

Those skills matter just as much as technical ability.

So maybe the better question is... are you building a shop, or are you building a business?

“You get one oil change a year for $20,000... and everything else is free.”

Sounds ridiculous, right?

But it highlights how easy it is to fall in love with the way something is packaged instead of looking at what you're actually getting.

That’s where the conversation went next:

“Did your last manager bring you a rose every morning?”

In other words, did they make you feel good while bigger problems were being ignored?

Because great leadership isn’t about making people comfortable.

It’s about creating results, solving problems, and building something that lasts.

Sometimes the nicest presentation hides the biggest issues.

Have you ever seen style win over substance in a business?

One of the biggest mistakes we make in this industry is assuming young technicians are ready for training just because they're old enough to enroll in it.

The reality is that many students are being asked to learn complex technical concepts at 15, 16, or 17 years old, long before they understand why those concepts matter. They memorize information long enough to pass a test, but they haven't yet developed the mindset that they're learning skills they'll need for the rest of their careers.

That's why so many instructors hear the same response years later: "Yeah, I learned that... but I don't remember it anymore."

The problem isn't always the student. Sometimes it's the timing.

As vehicles become more advanced and the demands on technicians continue to grow, we may need to rethink how and when we introduce people to this profession. Technical knowledge matters, but so does maturity, life experience, and understanding that learning doesn't end when the class is over.

If we want better technicians tomorrow, we need to have a serious conversation about how we're training them today.

Join us for a live 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐌𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 with David Roman and Cecil Bullard

Everyone says there’s a technician shortage...

But what if the real problem isn’t finding technicians?

What if the bigger issue is that your shop isn’t getting the most out of the team you already have?

And truthfully? Some shops are thriving with the same hiring challenges everyone else faces.
The difference is how they manage productivity, efficiency, and performance inside the shop.

This conversation is about uncovering what’s really holding shops back—what Cecil and David are seeing every day, what’s actually working right now, and how successful shops are getting more from the technicians they already have.

One of the hardest conversations a business owner can have is this:

“You don’t own a business. You own a job.”

If the business stops the moment you leave...
If it can’t survive an injury...
If it can’t operate without you...

You haven’t built a business. You’ve built a position for yourself.

And that becomes a real problem 10 years down the road.

Because many owners say they’re building freedom and security for their family.

But if something happens to them, what are they really leaving behind?

A business that runs without you is an asset.

A business that depends on you for everything is a liability.

Could your business survive without you for 30 days?
