Gardens are open dawn to dusk. Sedalia Museum and Gardens began as a small group interested in the history of Western Douglas County, Colorado. The West Douglas County Fire Protection District built a new fire house, and museum volunteers teamed with Douglas County Master Gardeners to landscape the area. The grounds now feature officia
l demonstration gardens for the Plant Select program, a collaboration between Colorado State University, Denver Botanic Gardens and the green industry. Plants in the garden are selected specifically for growing conditions in Colorado. Soon museum collections outgrew the original home. A neighboring rancher offered the Museum a Queen Ann Victorian cottage, built by one of Sedalia’s early settlers, for $1, on the condition that they move it. The fire department offered to locate the building on its property. Some two years and $100,000 later, the building was restored and opened in 2009 as the new Sedalia museum. Volunteers published a series of books on Sedalia and its residents, held Chili cook-offs and garage sales, and hosted Christmas parties to raise funds for the move and renovation. The attractive little building houses changing collections of Sedalia and period artifacts, and oral and written histories of local families. It has a growing collection of photos from Sedalia, all cataloged and on disk. All materials are available to historians and genealogists. Local artists exhibit their paintings in the museum on occasion, and a lending library is available to the community. The museum is open mid-May through mid-September from 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, and by appointment.
