Cars is turning twenty, and it's coming back to the big screen — our big screen, in a theater that's been standing on Route 66 since 1919.

Here's the part that gets us: when Pixar was building Radiator Springs, they came and drove this road. Historian Michael Wallis took the crew down 66 so they could see the real towns the movie is about. Vinita is one of those towns. This has always been our movie.

A motel room, a warm hug, more than an hour of stories – and two little souvenirs I still treasure today.

Meeting Ramona Lehman at the legendary Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon, Missouri, became one of those Route 66 moments I will never forget. She didn’t simply tell us the story of the motel and her life on the Mother Road – she made us feel like old friends rather than guests.

My latest story remembers Ramona and Bob Lehman, their decades at the Munger Moss, and a very special stay in Room 24.

Im Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon begegneten wir Ramona Lehman – der „Mother of the Mother Road“ – und erlebten eine Herzlichkeit, die mich bis heute berührt.

Some Route 66 stories begin on the road. Others begin long before you ever get there.

Penny was already part of my Route 66 journey before we finally met in person. What followed were shared meals, laughter, another reunion hundreds of miles down the Mother Road – and the realization that sometimes the most memorable part of a journey isn’t a place at all.

It’s a person.

Meet Penny in the latest story from Faces, Friendships & Stories.

Manche Route 66 Begegnungen beginnen lange vor dem ersten Händedruck. Und manchmal wartet am Ende nicht nur die Mother Road, sondern eine Freundschaft, mit der man nie gerechnet hätte.

What can I possibly do for Route 66 when half a world lies between the Mother Road and me?

As it turns out, quite a lot.

I can tell the stories that deserve to be remembered. I can keep memories alive, put faces to the places along the road, and shine a light on the small businesses that give Route 66 its heart and soul. And perhaps, along the way, I can encourage others to slow down, look a little closer, and discover the people behind the signs and storefronts.

Somewhere along the way, I realized something myself:
I’m not watching from afar. I’m already part of the story.

In my new blog post, I share what my own small contribution to keeping Route 66 alive looks like.

And now I’d love to turn the question around:
What will you do to help keep the Mother Road alive for the generations still to come?

Route 66 turns 100. But what comes next?

2026 will bring celebrations, festivals, travelers and worldwide attention to the Mother Road.

But I keep thinking about the day after the party.

What will Route 66 look like in 2027 – and five or ten years from now? Will we still support the small businesses, historic motels and, most importantly, the people who keep this road alive?

I think the future of Route 66 is just as important as its past.

Some thoughts about what comes after the Centennial – now on Route66Travelers.

Was kommt danach? 2026 steht die Route 66 im Rampenlicht. Sie wird gefeiert, besucht und vermutlich öfter fotografiert als je zuvor. Doch was geschieht, wenn der große Jubiläumstrubel vorbei ist? M…
