Today’s last day of Gross Out Camp got canceled because of the weather, but what a time it has been. πŸŒΏπŸ’š

I had the privilege of spending time with two incredible groups of campers, exploring plants, bugs, water, archaeology, and all the weird and wonderful things nature has to offer.

We got muddy, we got rained on, we laughed a lot, and most importantly, we got kids outside.

I’m so grateful for every child who showed up curious and willing to learn, for Ms. Carmen and Old Cahawba, and for Fresh Air Family for creating and supporting opportunities like this for kids.

Severe weather may have ended it a little early, but it doesn’t take away from what an amazing time we had.

The kids are singing, laughing, splashing through the rain, and running toward a tree because they're excited they recognized it.

That's it.

That's the goal.

To help kids fall in love with the world around them. To trade a little screen time for big curiosity.
To teach them that adventure isn't something you watch, it's something you do.

If a child leaves more excited about nature than they were when they arrived, I'd call that a pretty good day. πŸŒΏπŸ’šπŸ

Help me congratulate our newest Junior Herbalists! πŸŒΏπŸπŸŽ“

These amazing kids completed their herb walk today and can now successfully identify five or more wild plants growing around them.

That may not sound like much, but every plant they learn is a step toward greater confidence, curiosity, and connection with the natural world.

I'm so proud of this group and all the enthusiasm they brought to the trail today. πŸ’šπŸŒΏ

Today warmed my heart. Nothing makes me happier than hearing kids get excited about plants. πŸŒΏπŸ˜†

By the end of the herb walk, they were eager to answer questions, identify plants, and share what they had learned.

It's amazing how quickly curiosity grows when you give it a chance.

A little rain wasn't going to stop Gross Out Camp at Old Cahawba πŸŒ§οΈπŸŒΏπŸ’š

Today we were joined by Verna Gates, founder and executive director of Fresh Air Family. My dear friend Todd Prater stopped by to interview Ms. Verna, Ms. Carmen Yelle, and me about the camp and what makes it so special.

While the weather changed our plans, it didn't stop the learning or the smiles. Ms. Carmen led our water cycle activities, and the kids had a great time exploring how water moves through our world.

Rain or shine, science happens. πŸŒΏπŸ’§

I'm terrible at networking.

I don't know how to pitch myself. I don't know how to turn every conversation into an opportunity. I don't know all of the right people or the right things to say.

What I do know how to do is take kids outside.

I know how to get excited about a plant. I know how to answer questions. I know how to help a child see something they've walked past a hundred times and suddenly think it's the coolest thing in the world.

That's really been my entire strategy.

Just keep showing up. Keep teaching. Keep sharing what I love.

I never expected any of this. The opportunities, the invitations, the collaborations, or the people I've met along the way.

That's why I appreciate this Facebook community so much. Every like, comment, share, encouraging message, book purchase, and kid who shows up to a herb walk has helped make Snake Charmer Herbs what it is today.

So I guess I'll keep following the trail and see where it leads. πŸŒΏπŸ’šπŸ

We had a great day getting to know a new group of kids!

The sensory hike ended with a bear hunt.

One minute we were talking about what we could see, hear, smell, and feel in the woods.

The next minute we were marching down the trail singing at the top of our lungs.

That's outdoor education with kids for you.

Every time a child goes outside, identifies a plant, and uses it, it is an act of protest.

This knowledge was not lost by accident.

Pharmaceutical companies spent decades telling us that all plant medicine was primitive and backwards.

Chemical companies convinced us that the plants growing freely in our yards were weeds that needed to be sprayed.

Grocery stores disconnected us from our food and our medicine until most of us forgot that they were ever the same thing.

That happened within a few generations. And most of us did not even notice.

But the plants are still here. Dandelion is still growing in your yard. Plantain is still growing where people walk. The knowledge is still there too it just needs someone to pass it on.

That is what we do at Snake Charmer Herbs. We get kids outside. We teach them the plants growing around them. We give them something that belongs to them.

Every child who learns this carries it forward.
That is the whole point.
