🐍🌿 WHAT ARE SNAKE SCOUTS? 🌿🐍

You may have seen a couple of our kids sporting Water Moccasin badges lately, so let me explain what they've been working toward!

Snake Scouts is the Snake Charmer Herbs nature program created to encourage kids to keep coming back, keep exploring, and build real, lasting knowledge of the natural world right here in Alabama.

Our Scouts don't just learn about plants. They learn to identify what's growing and living around them, understand the role even the less loved creatures play in our ecosystems, practice Leave No Trace, participate in citizen science, care for wild places, and share what they know.

As they attend Snake Charmer Herbs events, they work through four levels:

🐍 3 events = Water Moccasins
🐍 6 events =Copperheads
🐍 12 events = Kingsnakes
🐍 20 events = Timber Rattlesnakes

We've already welcomed our first TWO Water Moccasins into the program! 🥹🐍 That means they've each shown up, gotten outside, learned with us, and completed their first three events.

At every level up, our Scouts make the same promise:

“I will learn the plants around me and share what I know. I will respect nature, protect wild places, and leave them better than I found them.”

The goal is simple: raise kids who know the land around them, respect it, and want to protect it.

🌿 What does “endemic” mean?

You’ll hear naturalists use the word endemic a lot, but what does it actually mean?

An endemic species is a species that naturally occurs in one particular geographic area and nowhere else in the world.

That area can be huge, like an entire country, or incredibly tiny, like one river system, mountain, island, or even a particular type of soil.

And Alabama has some incredible examples.

🌱 Alabama has more than 3,000 native plant species, and current sources put the number of plants found only in Alabama at roughly 31 endemic species or taxa, depending on how they're classified.

One of the coolest examples is the Alabama sandstone oak (Quercus boyntonii). It is Alabama's only endemic tree. If you see one growing naturally somewhere on Earth, you're in Alabama.

Then there are the Ketona Dolomite Glades in Bibb County. Their unusual geology and soil support eight endemic plant taxa, plants like Cahaba prairie-clover, Cahaba Indian paintbrush, Cahaba torch and sticky rosinweed that occur naturally nowhere else.

And right here in Dallas County, we have the Old Cahawba rosinweed (Silphium perplexum). Its entire worldwide range is limited to just three Alabama counties, with all known populations occurring within about eight miles of the Cahaba River.

Endemism isn't limited to plants, either.

The Cahaba River supports 13 species found nowhere else in the world. Alabama's rivers, caves, forests, prairies and glades have created little ecological worlds where species evolved that simply don't exist anywhere else.

That's what makes the word endemic so important.

Native means a species naturally belongs here.

Endemic means this may be the only here it has.

When an endemic species disappears from Alabama, it doesn't still exist naturally in Georgia, Tennessee or somewhere across the ocean.

It can mean it has disappeared from the entire planet.

Sometimes protecting the world's biodiversity starts with protecting a little patch of Alabama. 🌿🐍

🌲 These kids are officially PINE NUTS! 🌲😂

Our Snake Charmer Herbs Pine Event was awesome! The kids learned pine identification, traditional and practical uses of pine, and about the many species that rely on pine trees for food, shelter, and habitat.

Then we put that knowledge to work! We made pine soda using vitamin C rich pine needles and got good and messy making pinecone bird feeders for the birds.

After putting in the work, every kid earned their very own Pine Expert badge!

And, of course, it rained. 😂🌧️ At this point, rain might as well be part of the Snake Charmer Herbs curriculum. But a little weather has never stopped us! The kids kept right on learning, creating, exploring, and having fun.

We also had something extra special to celebrate! 🐍🌿

Hendrix and Ever leveled up and officially became Snake Scouts and earned their Water Moccasins badges! These are their first Snake Scouts badges and the beginning of even more learning, exploring, and adventures in nature. We are so excited to watch these naturalists keep growing their knowledge of the world around them! 💚

Birthday behavior: hiking 5 miles through the Alabama woods and eating Smilax straight off the trail. 😂🌿🐍

I wanted to start 35 doing something I’d be proud of, so King’s Chair it was.

A little climbing, a lot of sweating, some incredible views, and apparently a trail snack because I cannot encounter an edible plant without acting like the woods are a grocery store. 😂

Honestly, this is exactly how I wanted to spend my birthday outside, moving, touching grass, and occasionally eating it.

35 🌿 Let’s see where the trail goes from here.
