UPDATE: Zabe and the suspect were located in Mattoon, Illinois at 12:25 p.m. and are in custody by local authorities. The child is now safe. Thanks for your assistance during the AMBER alert.

EARLIER: PLEASE SHARE: KBI has issued an AMBER alert at the request of the Topeka Police Department for missing Topeka child, Zabe Mendez, who is nearly 2-years-old. Zabe was last seen with the suspect Christopher Barnshaw, 32, July 21 at 5:45 a.m. Barnshaw is likely driving a 2008 white Lexus IS 250, with Kansas tag 4003AHF.

Barnshaw is a white male, with brown hair, brown eyes and facial hair.

On July 22, at 11 a.m., the Topeka Police Department provided the following information to the KBI. On July 18, Zabe Mendez was forcibly taken from his mother. Zabe is in immediate danger. His mother’s white Lexus is also missing.

Zabe Mendez is a male, around 2 feet 5 inches tall, who weighs around 40 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Call 911 immediately if you have seen the missing child or the suspect’s vehicle. If you have other information call 1-800-KS-CRIME.
