🚧‼️Newfound Gap Road 🚧‼️
On August 1, heavy rainfall resulted in a landslide between mile markers 12 and 13 on the Tennessee side of Newfound Gap Road. The adjacent waterway, Walker Camp Prong, undermined part of the roadway, affecting an area of approximately 100 feet and leaving the southbound lane significantly compromised.
The National Park Service, alongside the Federal Highway Administration, is currently assessing the damage.
For travelers looking to journey between North Carolina and Tennessee, we advise using Interstate 40 as an alternative route.
The park is preparing for a partial reopening on the North Carolina side of the park from Oconaluftee to Newfound Gap early next week. This partial reopening will allow visitors to access Kuwohi from the North Carolina side of the park……
