Before there was a Gatlinburg, there was Martha Jane Huskey Ogle.
Her husband, William Ogle, had found the land called White Oak Flats and prepared logs for a cabin. But he died before he could bring his family into these mountains.
Martha Jane carried the dream forward.
A widowed mother with five sons and two daughters, she made the difficult journey to White Oak Flats, completed the cabin, and established her family here.
There were no streets, stores, or town waiting for them.
Only forest, water, mountains, and the beginning of what would become Gatlinburg.
Martha Jane did not simply settle here.
She became the founding matriarch of White Oak Flats, and generations of her descendants still call these mountains home.
