We made it! Kind of. At the very least, we’re almost there to the end of the semester! In the meantime, we just published the last issue of the semester, both in print and online.

Be sure to read former Sorority Council President Mary Courtney Finn’s article reflecting on Greek Life, our Editor-in-Chief’s article on the Stirling’s craft table, and our Sports Editor’s feature on Sewanee’s incredibly impressive men’s lacrosse team.

Issue 5 post desc
Well, would you look at that? Sparty has come and gone (to the joy of some and dismay of others), and exams are on the horizon. Want a break from studying? Read our fifth issue, available in print and online! Junior Editor Graci Vlattas (C ’29) researched the spread of malicious fire alarms on campus and their impacts. Also, contributing writer Melody Norman has much to say on students distracted by their screens in class. And former EIC Lizzy Donker returns as Executive Editor Sanjana Priyonti profiles her growth as a student journalist.

We’re in the home stretch, and Sparty is on the horizon! For Issue 4, we got to investigate on a lot of what Sewanee has to offer. Our Sports Editor Irene did a fabulous job interviewing NYT bestselling author Wright Thompson about Sewanee’s role in facing the South’s dark history. Also, our Features Editor Israa Zayed interviewed Professor Abby Colbert about how she prepares her students for the world of immigration law. Be sure to check out the many other articles we have in this issue!

At last, the weather is (mostly) normal again! To celebrate, we have a very packed print issue for you all, combining our articles from issues 2 and 3.

If you’re curious about the proposed senior living facility on campus, the increased need at local food pantries, or the return of the Sewanee yearbook, we encourage you to read this one. Also, in response to the rising domestic tensions in the US, we want to highlight our current Opinions Editor’s piece on ICE and how we can stand up to injustice.

The groundhog said we’d have 6 more weeks of winter, but why let that get us in a bad mood? The first issue of the semester is here, and we have a lot to cover.

We have an exclusive Q&A with Vice-Chancellor Pearigen about all things Sewanee, from the new University apartments to the proposed luxury senior living facility Arcadia. Also, we looked into the installation ceremony for Dean Jennifer Cooley and campus band Jettison’s last performance.

As the semester comes to a close, we wanted to share a special sports article we just published. Our Sports Editor Irene Boehm interviewed the new football head coach, Joe Freitag, and we discussed his plans with the Tigers, filling the shoes of former head coach Andy McCollum, and everything in between.

*UPDATED TIME: 6:00-7:00 PM*

How do we report about politics, especially now when the nation is so divided? How do Sewanee English majors find their way into a journalism career? Sewanee alumnus and New York Times Culture Editor Mike Peed and The Sewanee Purple editorial staff talk about all this and how to navigate modern day journalism and politics. Join us at the Social Lodge on October 16th, 6:00 PM! The event is sponsored by the English and Creative Writing Department, the Politics Department, Career Readiness, and the University Lecture Committee.
Want to learn more about Mike Peed? He is currently an editor at The New York Times. Previously, he worked at The New Yorker. An article he wrote for that magazine on a blight destroying the world’s banana crops was cited by the Best American Science and Nature Writing series. He has also edited at Men’s Journal, and he began his career at National Journal, in Washington.
