•SVFD celebrates Fire Prevention Week

•City utility rates to increase
As planned in the city’s recently adopted 2025-26 budget plans, Seward utility customers will see electric, water and sewer rates increase 3% with their October billing cycle.

•Blood drive
A community blood drive is scheduled Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1245 N. Second St., in Seward. Appointments are recommended by visiting ncbb.org/searchdrives and using the sponsor code SCBD or call (402) 486-9414.

•Flu shots
The Utica Clinic will offer flu shots at the Utica Senior Center from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.

•Free movie at SML
The Seward Memorial Library will host a free movie on Wednesday, Oct. 15, an American biographical drama at 1 p.m. Feel free to bring snacks and a drink. Visit sewardlibrary.org for more information.

•Briggs plays at state
Blair Briggs, a senior at Seward High, finished tied for 39th in the Class B state golf tournament Oct. 13 and 14. She shot a 190 over the two days at Scottsbluff.

Neighbors file suit over poultry barn conditional permit
Four residents who live near the proposed Pine Creek Poultry LLC chicken barns have filed suit asking the Seward County District Court to reverse the Seward County Board of Commissioners’ decision to grant a conditional use permit for the barns on Aug. 26.

TODAY - League of Women Voters meets
The League of Women Voters of Seward County will meet the second Monday of each month starting at 6 p.m. at the Seward United Methodist Church. The league is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, advances awareness of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Membership is open to women and men. For more information, (402) 416-4342.

TOMORROW - Grief support group meets
Tabitha hosts a grief support group the second Tuesday of every month at 5 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Seward. To register, call Tabitha at (402) 362-7739.

•SHS freshman receives rodeo crown
A Seward High freshman is now royalty.
Kennedy Meinberg was crowned Miss Nebraska Cowgirl Queen for 2025-26 Sept. 21.

•Donations sought for Purple Bin Project
GFWC Seward Woman’s Club will support the Hope Crisis Center’s Purple Bin Project, collecting items to assist those involved in domestic violence. A purple bin will be located by the front door of the Seward Civic Center during October. Donations can include laundry soap, hand soap, dish soap, Clorox wipes, body lotion, plastic silverware, kitchen trash bags, hair brushes, pillows, gallon/quart plastic bags, among other related items. Walmart gift cards and gas gift cards will also be accepted.

TODAY - Flu shots
Flu shots will be available at the Seward Senior Center, 1010 Manor Drive, on Friday, Oct. 10, from 1 – 2 p.m. Bring your insurance card. All vaccine events are while supplies last.

TODAY - Fun Fridays
Just For Fun Fridays have started again at the Seward Memorial Library. Stop by the library every Friday afternoon from 1:30 – 3 p.m. for a game of cards or bingo. The first and third Fridays will be Ten Point Pitch or Five Crowns and on the second and fourth Fridays, Bingo.

TODAY - Learn to dowse
The Seward County Genealogical Society will host a session on dowsing, weather permitting, at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Blue Mound Cemetery in Milford.

TOMORROW - Farmers market
The Seward Farmers Market is on the courthouse square. Homegrown and homemade goods will be available Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 5 – 7 p.m.
