Southcentral Alaska shakes early Thanksgiving

Two larger earthquakes were felt throughout Southcentral Alaska around 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Smaller temblors were also generated along the Aleutian active zone and through the Alaska Peninsula into Denali Park.

A magnitude 6 quake near Willow caused momentary electrical power instability along transmission lines paralleling the Parks Highway and switching could be heard in household and office power supplies all over the region.

A second magnitude 4.8 quake on the Alaska Peninsula near Lake Becharof closest to the small communities of Naknek and Egegik was felt more strongly on the Kenai Peninsula, generating concern and anxiety in Gulf Coast adjacent towns like Homer and Seward.

Tragic love triangle claims lives in Thebes

SEWARD, GR — Seward High School's Seward Theatre Collective brings a production of "The Two Noble Kinsmen" to Seward for two weekends starting Friday.

It seems like yesteryear that a deadly feud between two noble cousins, once inseparable in battle and brotherhood, erupted yesterday in a wooded grove outside Athens, leaving one kinsman dead, the other victorious yet heartbroken, and a planned royal wedding in disarray.

The tragic tale of Palamon and Arcite bears the joint authorship of William Shakespeare and John Fletcher.

The 1613 collaboration, one of the last in Shakespeare’s career, blends his gravitas with Fletcher’s flair for romance and spectacle.

Curtain at 6:30 p.m., Friday, for the first date of six at the Seward High School Theater.

Seniors walk free at Alaska SeaLife Center

SEWARD, AK — Local seniors from Seward and Moose Pass are invited to join a winter walking program at the Alaska SeaLife Center, beginning this week.

The walk is sponsored by the Seward Senior Center and the SeaLife Center, and invites strollers to enjoy the exhibit space and bay-side views at the facility with plenty of benches available for rest and to relax and conversate.

The schedule is Thursday through Monday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Center is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The activity is open to seniors from Seward and Moose Pass, offering them a comfortable environment to walk while enjoying the marine-wildlife surroundings at the SeaLife Center.

Walkers are encouraged to bring walking poles or wear sturdy shoes and sign in at the front desk as they enter. Registration or advance notice at the Senior Center is requested but not required, so organizers can plan for group size and refreshment availability.

The escalator to the main track in the exhibit area is turned off for the winter to conserve, but the elevator is available. A really cool staircase is also readily available and great for cardio.

According to Dana Paperman, Executive Director at the Seward Senior Center, “This is a great way to get some light exercise, fresh air and friendly company.”

Schedule at a glance:

Dates: November 1 → March 31
Days: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Location: Alaska SeaLife Center, Seward

For more information or to sign up, please contact the Seward Senior Center.

Also, "Thank You Thursdays" are in effect through February, offering free admission on Thursday to the Alaska SeaLife Center for locals with a valid Alaska ID.

The relentless march of progress

On Wednesday, around 60 Bear Creeksters gathered at the local fire department training room to discuss forming a community council.

Bear Creek is apparently the only community in the region without something along those lines.
