What Are You Afraid to Lose? | Matthew 19:16-30 (pt.1)

What happens when someone sincerely wants eternal life, but misunderstands how it is received?

In Matthew 19, a rich young ruler comes to Jesus with an important question: “What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
His question reveals both sincerity and confusion. He believes eternal life is something he can gain by doing more, adding something good to the life he already has. But Jesus begins to show him that the issue is not what he needs to add—it is what he is unwilling to release.

In this episode, Pastor Mike begins walking us through Matthew 19:16–30, helping us see the danger of trying to earn eternal life while still holding tightly to the things that may be keeping us from truly following Christ.

Perfect in Christ | Matthew 19:16-30 teaser 1

Heaven requires perfection—but that perfection cannot come from us.

We are not accepted because we are perfect in ourselves, but because Jesus is perfect—and by faith, His righteousness is credited to us.
That is the hope of the gospel.

The Greater Gift Is Jesus | Matthew 19:13-15 (pt. 2)

What are we really seeking when we come to Jesus?

In Matthew 19, the children brought to Jesus receive more than a blessing. They receive time, attention, and love from the Savior Himself. In this episode, Pastor Mike helps us consider the difference between seeking God’s hand and seeking God’s face—and why the greatest gift Jesus gives is ultimately Himself.

What Fault Do You Find in Jesus? | Matthew 19:13-15 teaser 2

Don’t evaluate Christianity by the false representations of it you may have experienced. Christianity must ultimately be evaluated by Christ Himself. People may misrepresent Him. Christians may fail to reflect Him rightly. But Jesus is not guilty of the sins done in His name. When Jesus was examined before the cross, even His enemies could find no fault in Him.

So the question is worth asking: what fault do we actually find in Jesus?

You don’t get stronger by protecting yourself.
You get stronger by serving others.

Self-protection may feel safe in the moment, but over time it weakens us.
It turns us inward.
It makes us guarded.
And often, it leads us to tear down the very people we were meant to build up.

But when we serve others, strengthen others, and help others grow, everyone is built up together.

“Let the Children Come to Me” Explained | Matthew 19:13-15 (pt.1)

In Matthew 19, we move from confrontation to invitation.

While the religious leaders came to Jesus looking to test Him, now parents come bringing their children—hoping for blessing, prayer, and the touch of the Messiah. But surprisingly, the obstacle in this moment is not the crowd, the children, or even the parents. It’s the disciples. They rebuke those who are trying to come to Jesus.

Your life should support the gospel you share.

The gospel is true no matter what.
But sometimes people struggle to hear it from us because our lives don’t seem to support what we’re saying.

Integrity matters.
Follow-through matters.
Faithfulness matters.

People are listening to more than our words.

Being Okay with Being Weak | Matthew 19:13-15 teaser 1

You don’t have to be impressive to come to Jesus.

God is not looking for people who can prove they are special, strong, or spiritually impressive. Scripture tells us that God has chosen the weak, the foolish, and the overlooked things of the world to confound the wise.

The challenge for us is not becoming strong enough to be accepted by God, but being willing to come to Him honestly in our weakness. That is where grace meets us.

Marriage, Divorce, and the Heart of God | Matthew 19:1-12 (pt. 2)

In this episode, The conversation about marriage and divorce continues—but now Jesus brings the issue deeper than legal permission and into the condition of the human heart.

The Pharisees assume that because Moses allowed divorce, God must have commanded it. But Jesus makes an important distinction: permission is not the same as design. Divorce was never God’s ideal—it was a provision made because of the hardness of human hearts.

Pastor Mike continues through Matthew 19, helping us understand the difference between what God permits and what He originally intended.

Permission Is Not the Same as Desire | Matthew 19:1-12 teaser 2

Just because God allows something doesn’t mean it reflects His best for us. Scripture shows us that God sometimes allows decisions He would rather we not make—not because He lacks authority, but because love leaves room for real choice.

Like a parent with a child, permission does not always equal approval.

The question isn’t only “Can I do this?” but “Is this what God desires for me?” Learning that difference can change the way we approach faith, relationships, and obedience.
