Liberian Muslim Leader Expresses Frustration Over Lack of Support for Religious Holiday Campaign

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Chief Imam Ali Krayee has voiced his frustration regarding what he describes as waning support from Liberia's Muslim community in the ongoing push for a national religious holiday. Speaking at an award ceremony organized by the Liberia National Muslim Youth, Krayee stated that he feels "tired" of shouldering the burden of advocacy alone.

For years, Krayee and other Muslim leaders have been lobbying the legislature to declare the end of Ramadan and Abraham Day as official national holidays. However, Krayee noted that the effort is often perceived by some Liberians as being driven by a single tribe rather than representing a unified Muslim voice, which he believes has undermined the cause.

The Chief Imam also addressed accusations that he has received "huge funding from the Arab world" for his advocacy, claiming that these allegations have discouraged others from joining the campaign.
Krayee called on young Muslims to take up the fight, warning that rising discrimination and divisions within the community are weakening their collective voice.

Woman Charged With Aggravated Assault After Slicing Child's Finger

MONROVIA, LIBERIA - A 32-year-old woman, Eve Wamah, has been charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment in connection with a disturbing incident in Gardnersville, New Georgia, that left a 10-year-old girl with a severe hand injury.

According to a release from the Liberia National Police's Women and Children Protection Section, Wamah allegedly used a sharp object to wound the victim, identified as Georgina Johnny. The child’s right index finger was sliced, causing what investigators described as serious bodily harm.

The case has been forwarded to the court. While the motive and further details of the attack have not been disclosed by authorities, the incident has drawn a swift reaction from child rights advocates. They are urging for prompt legal action and justice for the young victim.

Liberia's Proposed War Crimes Court Needs Up to $50 Million, Says NGO

MONROVIA – A war and economic crimes court for Liberia would require an estimated $40 to $50 million to be established and fully operational, according to the Global Justice and Research Project (GJRP), a non-governmental organization that documents wartime atrocities.

On a local radio talk show in Monrovia on Friday, Hassan Bility, the GJRP's director, stated that the Liberian government must take the lead by making a significant financial contribution to encourage the international community to do the same. "The Liberian government needs to demonstrate that it's taking ownership of the process," Bility said.

Also appearing on the program, Adama Dempster, the Secretary General of the Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform of Liberia, highlighted the urgent need for rehabilitation and reparations for civil war victims. Dempster argued that the current rise in drug use among the population is a clear sign of the failed rehabilitation and reparations programs to date.

House Speaker Pledges $1M LD for New Kru Town Students

MONROVIA – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, has committed one million Liberian Dollars ($1M LD) to support the tuition fees of 200 students in the Borough of New Kru Town on Bushrod Island. Each student will receive $5,000 LD to help offset their educational costs.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Chief of Office Staff, Fredrick Davies, at a recent fund drive organized by the Governor of the Borough of New Kru Town. Davies highlighted the Speaker's dedication to assisting local youth with their education.

Government Initiatives to Support Youth
In related news, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Bryan McGill, revealed that President Joseph Boakai's administration plans to launch a short-term vacation job program for students in the New Kru Town Borough. This initiative is expected to begin next week.

McGill also announced a broader, nationwide effort, stating that the Ministry of Youth and Sports will soon be launching a national youth service program. This program aims to provide young people across the country with opportunities for skill development and community engagement.

Both initiatives signal a concerted effort by the government to invest in the future of Liberian youth through both educational and professional development opportunities.

Update

Football legends George Weah and Didier Drogba are among the high-profile names appointed to a new Fifa panel of 16 ex-players which aims to bolster efforts to tackle racism in the game.

The sport's global governing body originally announced the creation of a players' voice panel at its annual congress in Thailand in May 2024.

Former AC Milan striker Weah and ex-Chelsea forward Drogba have now been named as part of the group which includes players - both men and women - from 14 countries.

The panel will advise on anti-racism strategies, participate in educational programmes and contribute to sports.
