The TUMUTU Agricultural Educational Training Center is set to officially reopen on June 20, 2026, in a move widely seen as part of government efforts to expand youth empowerment through agricultural and vocational training across Liberia.
The reopening is linked to commitments made by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, during her nationwide assessment tour of youth development institutions earlier this year.
During that engagement, she pledged to ensure the restoration of key training centers to increase access to practical skills for young Liberians.
Following months of renovation and rehabilitation, the TUMUTU center has now been fully prepared to resume operations after a period of disruption.
Authorities say the upgraded facility is expected to play a critical role in strengthening Liberia’s agricultural training system and youth development agenda.
Speaking ahead of the reopening, the Director of the institution, Prince Kromah, confirmed that all major facilities, including classrooms, dormitories, and training spaces, have been restored and are ready for use.
He explained that the center will operate a modernized curriculum designed to meet the evolving demands of the agricultural sector.
The program will include crop production, livestock management, agribusiness, sustainable farming techniques, general agriculture, farm machinery operations, and computer studies.
According to management, the institution is targeting an intake of 200 students, with the goal of producing skilled young farmers, technicians, and agripreneurs who can contribute to national food security and rural economic development.
However, Director Kromah acknowledged that attracting enough students remains a key challenge ahead of reopening.
He noted that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has already provided 75 scholarships for prospective trainees, while discussions are ongoing with development partners to secure additional support.
He also called on parents, community leaders, and youth groups to encourage young people to take advantage of the opportunity, emphasizing that agriculture remains one of the most reliable pathways to employment and self-reliance in Liberia.
He stated, “Investing in young people through practical agricultural training is essential to transforming our food systems and strengthening rural livelihoods.”
The reopening of the TUMUTU center forms part of the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ broader strategy to revitalize technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions across the country.
The initiative is expected to bridge critical skills gaps, promote innovation, and encourage entrepreneurship among young Liberians, particularly in B**g, Margibi, and Nimba Counties.
With renewed government support, the institution is expected to reclaim its role as a leading center for agricultural training and youth empowerment, contributing to Liberia’s long-term goals of food security and sustainable development.
