Now that we’ve completed drilling for knock-down hardware (slightly easier than drilling for oil 😁), we can glue the back supports to the bases.

We used a couple of brads to keep things from slipping around in the clamps, but otherwise, these long-grain-to-long-grain joints only need glue.

On to back supports! We created a template out of 1/4” MDF and traced out 8 back supports. They were cut to rough shape on the band saw. Then cut to final shape using the template and a flush-cut bit in the router table.

At which point we were able to do a dry-fit assembly of an entire section.

Prototype! It doesn’t look pretty, but using some scraps to build a replica to key dimensions can help identify form and function issues.

This knock-up helped us confirm visual aspects such as platform overhang. It also confirmed that the as-designed layback angle looked good and was comfortable. It also revealed that the seat height in our original design was too low and the back was too high.

We saved ourselves a ton of time and materials by finding these issues now vs later in the build process.
