We often hear that about 22% of Americans attend church regularly. But newer research suggests the real number may be closer to 5%.
That’s not a small difference—it’s a reality check. Researchers tracking anonymous cell phone data found that actual attendance is far lower than what people report in surveys. Why? It’s something called social desirability bias. We tend to say we’re doing things that sound good, even if we’re not.
Yes, attendance rises on Christmas and Easter—but that’s occasional, not consistent. And even something as simple as bad weather can keep people home.
This raises two important points:
First, we may have been overestimating the influence of church in American life.
Second, it shows how much work remains to truly engage people in meaningful, consistent faith communities.
