In Colossians 2:20–23, Paul warns about religious rules that sound wise but cannot change a sinful heart. Rules may clean up the outside for a while, but they cannot make us love God.
It is a little like painting over rust. The truck may look better, but the problem is still underneath. Jesus does deeper work. Through the Holy Spirit, He changes our desires, attitudes, and actions from the inside out.
This does not mean obedience does not matter. It means we obey because Jesus is changing us, not because we are trying to earn God’s love or look better than someone else.
Legalism changes how we look. The Holy Spirit changes who we are.

Rules can keep us in line, but they can't change our hearts. Just like an electric fence keeps goats contained, external rules might stop our behavior—but only the Holy Spirit can transform what we actually want. Don't settle for rule-following when you could have real transformation.

Today we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the innocent who died, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families who still carry the weight of that day.

Days like this remind us that evil is real, suffering is painful, and this world is not yet as it should be.

But as followers of Jesus, we grieve with hope. We look forward to the return of our King, when Christ will make all things new, justice will be complete, and evil and death will finally be defeated forever.

“Look, I am making everything new.”
Revelation 21:5

Knowing that eternity is real should change the way we live today.
Scripture teaches that every person will stand before God, and that our eternal hope is found in Jesus Christ alone. That truth should produce humility, gratitude, and urgency.
We don’t speak about judgment with excitement or arrogance. We speak about it with tears, because people matter to God.
And we proclaim the good news clearly: Jesus saves. Grace is offered. The invitation is still open.
“For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 5:9 CSB

You matter to God.

Your value isn’t based on what you accomplish, how put together you are, or what other people think of you. You were made in the image of God, and Jesus reminds us that we are deeply valued by Him.

Salvation isn’t something we earn because we’re good enough. It is a gift of grace.

You are valuable to God, and His grace is greater than anything you could ever earn.

You’re welcome here. No pressure. No pretending.

We want to be a community where people are truly known, cared for, and welcomed by name. If you are looking for a church, we invite you to try our Stick Six Challenge. Join us for six Sundays, get to know the people and culture, and prayerfully consider whether God is leading you to make this your church home.

If, after six weeks, you believe God is leading you somewhere else, we will gladly recommend other faithful Christian churches in our area and help you find a place to try.

We are not trying to build our kingdom. We want to help build God’s Kingdom, even if your place in it is with another local church.

Come as you are. Take your time. You’re welcome here.

Shelby Alliance Church is updating our public photo policy.

For the foreseeable future, we will not publicly post identifiable faces of children or young people. At minimum, their faces will be blurred.

Recent court cases involving AI-generated child sexual abuse material have exposed both what is already happening and how quickly technology is outpacing existing safeguards. We love sharing the joy and life of our church, but protecting our children must come first.

Our pastor, James, has developed a free tool to help blur the faces of anyone it estimates to be under 21. Because automated detection is not perfect, every image should still be reviewed carefully.

We encourage other churches and organizations to consider similar safeguards.

We value connection. We choose safety.

Physical health matters, but godliness matters more.

The Bible does not say physical training has no value. It says its value is limited compared with the lasting value of godliness.

We care for our bodies so we can be ready and able to do what God calls us to do. That will look different for each person. We do not all have the same strength, health, mobility, or physical capacity, but we are all called to the same faithfulness.

The goal is not to worship our bodies or neglect them. The goal is to steward what God has given us for His purposes.

“Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things.”
