Press Release

On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, Officers from the Shelbyville Police Department were dispatched to an active scene where at least one person had been shot. Upon arriving, Officers immediately began receiving information regarding the identity of persons who were believed to be responsible.

The victim, William Rucker was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. Immediate lifesaving measures were taken by responding officers and the Shelby County Coroner. Mr. Rucker was transported to U of L Hospital downtown by Shelby County EMS, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Officers were able to locate the suspects’ vehicle a short distance away and were able to contain the area and take into custody one suspect who is identified as: Chivez Johnson. Mr. Johnson and the victim are related and currently the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. A second gunshot victim reportedly walked into U of L Hospital Shelbyville Emergency Room and was connected to this incident.

Mr. Johnson has been charged with Assault 1st Degree and Tampering with Physical evidence. Once Mr. Rucker’s medical status has been updated, additional charges may be forthcoming.

At this time all persons involved have been identified and this is still an active investigation. The Shelbyville Police Department wants to extend heartfelt thanks to all responding units, Shelby County Dispatch, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Shelby County Coroner’s Office, Shelby County EMS and KSP.

Our prayers go out to our community and the families affected by this tragedy.
