Some songs come from a place you can’t fake.

In this exclusive performance on the VetTunes Podcast, Scotty Hasting performs his song “Grateful” — a song shaped by surviving a near-death experience and learning to appreciate the things in life that are easy to overlook.

After being shot in an ambush in Afghanistan and facing a long road of recovery, Scotty came away with a different perspective on what really matters.

The little things.
The people around you.
Another morning.
Another chance.

“Grateful” is a reminder that sometimes it takes coming close to losing everything to truly understand how much you already have.

We’re honored to share this special performance as part of Episode 30 and the Season 2 finale of the VetTunes Podcast.

Sometimes recovery starts with finding something that gives you a reason to focus on what you CAN do instead of what you’ve lost.

After being wounded in combat, Scotty Hasting found adaptive sports — and eventually found himself behind a bow competing in archery at the Warrior Games and with the U.S. Paralympic program.

But for Scotty, archery became much more than competition.

There was something therapeutic about drawing the bow, controlling his breathing, blocking out everything around him and focusing on one target at a time.

For those moments, everything else could get quiet.

In this clip from the VetTunes Podcast, Scotty talks about discovering adaptive sports, competing at an elite level, and how archery became an important part of his recovery and his journey toward finding purpose again.

OUT TODAY — VETTUNES PODCAST EPISODE 30

When Scotty Hasting was shot in combat, the actions of his Army medic helped save his life.

In this powerful moment from the VetTunes Podcast, Scotty talks about the medic who treated him in the chaos after he was wounded — doing the job he was trained to do while giving Scotty a chance to make it home.

For Scotty, that moment is more than part of his combat story. It is a reminder that behind every survival story are often people whose courage, training, and split-second decisions changed someone else’s life forever.

Today, Scotty is still here. He’s making music, telling his story, and building a new mission — but he hasn’t forgotten the people who helped make that possible.

Sometimes there are moments you just can’t explain.

In this powerful clip from the VetTunes Podcast, Scotty Hasting recalls being medevaced after being wounded in combat. In the middle of the chaos, he remembers seeing a woman — a nurse — who calmly told him he could relax, that he could rest, and that he was in good hands.

Her presence gave him peace when he needed it most.

It wasn’t until later that Scotty learned something that stopped him in his tracks:

There were no female nurses on his medevac.

To Scotty, there’s no question who she was. She was an angel.

Some of the hardest battles don’t end when the deployment does.

In this clip from the VetTunes Podcast, Scotty Hasting opens up about dealing with survivor’s guilt — carrying the weight of making it home when others didn’t, and trying to understand what comes next.

It’s a deeply personal part of his story, and one that many veterans quietly carry with them long after leaving the battlefield.

For Scotty, music has become a way to process those experiences, tell the truth about what he’s lived through, and continue moving forward with purpose.

One of the best parts of the veteran music community is the bond that forms between people who understand where each other has been.

In this clip Scotty Hasting talks about his friendship with fellow veteran and artist Shannon Book — and the respect he has for Shannon’s journey.

Shannon’s story is one of overcoming addiction, rebuilding his life, and finding purpose and success through music. For Scotty, it’s more than just watching another artist succeed. It’s watching a friend and fellow veteran fight his way forward and create something meaningful on the other side.

That kind of brotherhood, support, and shared experience is exactly what VetTunes is all about.
