City Elections Will Likely Be Cancelled

Posted February 10, 2025 by Esther Lum

Although three council seats are up for election this year, so far no one has filed applications to run against any of the three incumbents: Charlie Bradt, Jim Pollard and Joe Summerlin. The deadline for filing with the city is February 14, and if no one else applies to run, elections will be cancelled.

Further information and details for potential candidates are on the city’s website: https://www.shenandoahtx.us/337/Election

Conservatives Sweep All 4 Seats on Conroe ISD Board

Despite a heavily contested race with 11 candidates vying for four school board positions, a slate of “conservative moms” easily rode to victory Tuesday, ousting incumbents Datren Williams and Stacey Chase to join the three conservative “mama bears” elected in 2022. This victory makes Conroe ISD the largest school district in Texas with full conservative control.

Should Medical Ma*****na Dispensary Be Located Next to Homes?

Despite multiple objections from residents, city attorney Bill Ferebee claimed state law makes it “pretty darn crystal clear” that the city cannot enforce its own zoning regulations and will likely grant a Special Use Permit (SUP) which would allow medical ma*****na to be dispensed near homes along Holly Hill (see Agenda Item 6).

During the August 20 Planning & Zoning meeting, residents expressed support for patients who would benefit from medical ma*****na but they questioned why this location was chosen rather than other available locations in the city such as Vision Park with its multiple medical facilities.

Council Buries Term Limits

Citing a conflict between a 2013 ordinance (see page 24)and the city’s 2011 Integrated Development Code, council voted unanimously on July 24 to amend the ordinance and remove all term limits for members of Planning & Zoning. Prior law allowed P&Z members to serve up to three consecutive two-year terms but had to be off for a year after that.

Residents Speak Out On Possible Zoning Change Along I-45

Planning & Zoning Commission held a special meeting on March 19 to discuss changing the zoning laws for a narrow strip of land facing the southbound I-45 feeder between Wellman and Reserach Forest. That area consists of various businesses such as hotels, restaurants, a gas station and two vacant buildings. Most of them were built under current (or previous) zoning laws which limit structure height to one story* (21 feet) because homes are located directly behind those businesses. Potential developers have said it is not economically feasible for them to consider a single story structure for any new development, given the narrow depth of the lots (300 feet in some places) and possible future widening of I-45.
