It’s been almost three years since I revived Nightmare Press and we’ve done alright. There have been ups and downs, but I’ve gotten past most of them. The press has grown its library, its reach, its audience, and its exposure, and I’m still working on ways to continue growth in that area.
The one consistent hurdle that has plagued me is the length of publication time. Every time I improve the situation, something else rises to present yet another obstacle. I’m not going into all the explanations because it doesn’t really matter. It’s my company so it’s my burden.
For some time now, I’ve considered addressing the matter in the least favorable way possible. I’ve saved it until I felt like I was out of options. Well, I’m out of options and it looks like publication times are just getting longer.
As of right now, I still have 2024 signings to finish. Then there’s 2025 and 2026. We’re almost through the year and had everything gone according to plan, we’d be working on 2026 right now, but I’m not even close.
So, here’s all I can do at this point. If anybody wants out of their contract, email the press. If you don’t want to wait—and I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t—I won’t keep you under contract. If you’re currently published and have not been happy with my performance as a publisher, contact me and I will let you out of your contract. That’s all I can think to do that is fair to the authors at this point.
If you’re fine with waiting, then we move forward as planned. Outside of this issue, the press is fine. There’s no danger of shutting down or any other problems. I just can’t seem to catch up no matter how much I try and I don’t feel it’s fair to hold on to anyone’s work.
Also, there will be no hard feelings on my end. It’s business, not personal. I understand that. I’m an author, too. I know how much work goes into writing and polishing a quality manuscript. I know what it means to finish the project, and the eagerness to see it released into the world in book form. I get it, and that’s why I’m offering the way out for those who might want to try to find a quicker route to publication than I am currently offering.
