β€οΈπŸ–€ – June 22-Meet Our Staff

This week, we are proud to spotlight Alisa Watkins, McKinney-Vento Teacher! ✨

After retiring from teaching English at BC, Alisa found the perfect β€œretired teacher job” serving students through the McKinney-Vento Program. The 2025-26 school year marks her fourth year working with MV, and her passion for supporting students shines through in everything she does. ❀️

What Alisa loves most about her role is being able to focus fully on students’ individual needs β€” encouraging them, supporting them, and helping them work toward graduation despite the trauma and instability they may face.

One meaningful story she shared was about a former student who was significantly behind on credits and struggling academically. Through encouragement, advocacy, and support, Alisa helped him recover credits, stay motivated, and ultimately graduate while participating in work-based learning his senior year. He even purchased his own truck before graduation and invited her to celebrate at his graduation party. πŸŽ“β€οΈ

🌟 Fun Facts About Alisa:
β€’ At Christmas, she loves decorating her house and office with LOTS of snowmen β˜ƒοΈ
β€’ She enjoys reading and spending time with her family, especially her six (soon to be seven!) grandchildren
β€’ Her go-to favorites are Diet Mountain Dew and anything chocolate 🍫

Favorite verse:
✨ β€œI can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” – Philippians 4:13

We are so thankful for the compassion, dedication, and encouragement Alisa brings to our students and families every day. ❀️

β€οΈπŸ–€ – June 15-Meet Our Staff

This week, we are excited to spotlight one of the caring individuals who helps support our McKinney-Vento students and families each day β€” Julia Thomas, McKinney-Vento Teacher! ✨

πŸ“š Julia has served in this role for 6 months and has been with BCPS for 3.5 years. What she loves most about her job is supporting students, helping them understand the importance of graduating, and planning for life after high school.

❀️ One of the most meaningful parts of her work?
β€œThe thank yous and gratitude I receive from students. It feeds my soul.”

🌿 Fun Facts About Julia:
β€’ She’s the only girl in a family with four brothers
β€’ Loves hiking, reading, writing, photography, and gardening
β€’ Runs on dark roast coffee and dark chocolate β˜•πŸ«

Her favorite quote:
✨ β€œBe the change you want to see in the world.” – Gandhi

Julia shared that this position is one of the most rewarding roles she has held in her career, and we are so thankful for the compassion, encouragement, and support she gives our students every day. ❀️

Big things are happening at the McKinney-Vento H.E.A.R.T. House! 🏑✨

We want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to Bid Rite Paving for helping create a brand new driveway and parking lot for the H.E.A.R.T. House. This important addition is helping transform the space into a welcoming and functional resource for students and families experiencing housing instability.

Because of the generosity and support of our community, this project became possible. We are especially thankful to our friends at Cedar Grove Community Church and Roger Brewer with Kentuciana Electrical Services for their donations that helped cover the discounted asphalt work. ❀️

Every act of kindness, partnership, and support brings us one step closer to opening the H.E.A.R.T. House and expanding resources for families in our community.

It truly takes a village β€” and we are incredibly grateful for ours. πŸ–€

β€οΈπŸ–€ – June 1 πŸŽ“

This weekend, we celebrated a milestone that deserves special recognition β€” the graduation of our McKinney-Vento seniors.

Despite the challenges that come with housing instability, these students showed incredible strength, resilience, and perseverance to earn their high school diplomas. This accomplishment is no small feat, and we are so proud of each and every one of them. ❀️

As a small token of appreciation and support for their next chapter, the MV Team provided Senior Starter Kits filled with helpful resources for life after high school, including:
✨ FAFSA resources
✨ College checklists
✨ Tax guidelines
✨ Local food and housing resources

We are also incredibly thankful for the support of our amazing community partners who helped celebrate our graduates:
🎒 Jeremy Goodin and Penn Station of Louisville donated TWO Kentucky Kingdom passes for each senior.
🍽️ Pastor Alicia Akridge and Davidson Memorial Church donated restaurant gift cards for all graduating seniors.

It truly takes a community to support students experiencing homelessness, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make our seniors feel seen, celebrated, and supported as they begin this new journey.

Congratulations Class of 2026 β€” your H.E.A.R.T. Team is cheering you on every step of the way! πŸŽ“β€οΈ

- May 25

Last week the McKinney-Vento H.E.A.R.T. Team took time to reflect on a year filled with growth, new partnerships, expanded support for students and families, and the upcoming opening of the H.E.A.R.T. House. ❀️

Even in the rain, we enjoyed visiting the Tin Man exhibit in the "Heart" of Bernheim Forest . This symbol aligns perfectly with the McKinney-Vento mission. Like the Tin Man searching for a heart and helping Dorothy find her way home, our work is rooted deeply in kindness, advocacy, and hope for students and families navigating housing insecurity.

We also proudly wore our new team shirts commemorating the upcoming opening of the H.E.A.R.T. House β€” a special reminder of how far we’ve come together and the exciting future ahead. 🌳🏠🌈🩢

Every day, we strive to help students overcome obstacles, feel supported, and find a sense of hope and home again.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the McKinney-Vento H.E.A.R.T. Program pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™

This weekend is also a reminder of the importance of community, compassion, and caring for one another; values that guide the work we do every day to support students and families experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

We are grateful for the freedom to serve our community and for the many families, staff, partners, and supporters who help make the H.E.A.R.T. Program possible.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and restful Memorial Day weekend.

: Meet the Team πŸ’™

This week we are spotlighting Miranda Goodin, McKinney-Vento Program Assistant!
Since joining BCPS in March 2026, Miranda has made a meaningful impact by helping remove barriers for students and families experiencing homelessness. One of the things she loves most about her job is building relationships with students and helping provide a reliable way to get to school each day.
One of her favorite memories was being asked by one of her student riders to pet their dog β€” a simple but meaningful reminder of the trust and connections built through this work. πŸ’™
Fun fact: Miranda has been a surrogate for a friend β€” twice! Outside of work, she enjoys baking, thrifting, and traveling.
Her favorite quote:
β€œHelping one person might not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.”
And of course…her go-to treat is always Diet Coke! πŸ₯€
Thank you, Miranda, for the compassion, kindness, and support you show our students and families every day!
