With temperatures lingering just below zero, Shenandoah firefighters were sent to the 500 Block of West Arlington Street for a house fire Wednesday morning. First arriving units arrived to find a working fire on the second floor but were able to make quick work of the job with one line. Fire crews from the Hook & Ladder, Phoenix and Columbia were assisted by Frackville and West End (Mahanoy City) firefighters. Authorities say the cause of the fire was related to careless smoking. All units were clear shortly after 5AM.

Last night the Rescue Hook & Ladder Company #1 of Shenandoah celebrated 150 years of service to the community. The celebration remembered the sacrifices and dedication of the company's members from the earliest beginnings to the newest members. Mike Kitsock told stories of the Hookies from personal experience and historical knowledge. President Bill Moyer celebrated 40 year members along with other key members who have been vital to the company's success. Retired Fire Chief Russ Schumack was given plaques to honor his time served and Lieutenant Mark Hysock received a special award for his life-saving efforts in December 2023 when he rescued an infant trapped in a house fire. The celebration continued into the night as guests enjoyed dancing and entertainment.
