SOILED DOVES (prostitutes), circa 1890. The mirror in a Miles City (Montana) brothel showed the reflection of the photographer as he fired his explosive powder flash, which could easily singe skin and eyebrows. Artistic bravura in a terrific composition! At left was a display for Sen-Sen breath freshener. Customers commonly left their photos with their favorite gal at the establishment.

Miles City was founded in 1877 when Col. Nelson A. Miles, commander of Fort Keogh, booted civilian sellers of alcohol from military land. The venerable but underfunded Montana Historical Society has 3,600 Morrison negatives, and has yet to post one Morrison photo on its website. Without an online presence, our history is unseen by the young and by those of us who cannot travel to Helena. Text and small-file digital restoration of a low-resolution source by Gary Coffrin. As always, I hope PC users will click image to enlarge/clarify.

Coming from a military familyโ€”her father was a Marine veteran, and her mother worked in the Navyโ€”Haaland faced many challenges before earning her degree from the University of New Mexico and later obtaining a law degree. Entering politics with the goal of advocating for Native American rights, she became one of the first two Native women elected to Congress in 2018 before joining the U.S. Cabinet in 2021. As a leader, Haaland has focused on issues such as protecting sacred Native lands, combating excessive resource exploitation, and promoting policies to support education and healthcare for Indigenous communities. Notably, she played a key role in restoring the Bears Ears National Monument and advancing the MMIW initiative to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Her contributions are not only politically significant but also symbolize the rise of Native Americans in the U.S. leadership system.

Leisure - what is it? It is that beautiful something that escapes us most of the time. Leisure, like most everything else, can be found if we truly want it. We seem to have the ability to do most of what we set our minds to do, and the less important things can be set aside for this particular thing. We get pretty stale when we never take time to relax. A few hours of getting away from even a beloved madhouse will make a new human being out of a bundle of nerves. Pursuit of leisure is to lose it. We can't suddenly say that the next five minutes will be for complete relaxation. It takes that long to begin to unwind. Gaiety and rhythm and frivolity are shunned by most minds. But if there are none of these, even in the smallest amounts, then leisure is more of a restless shuffling - like a night out with no place to go. We need to exercise our minds a little to achieve any goal, and leisure is definitely a goal!

BEAR BULL, Siksika (Northern Blackfoot of Canada) elder, 1926. Bear Bull had a tightly woven topknot of braided hair above the forehead, which indicated he was a keeper of a Thunder Medicine Pipe bundle. Clay dust gave a lighter color to his hair below the topknot. I regularly post my restorations of Old West photos, and the stunning side-profile portrait grabbed my notice. The Siksika Nation is in Alberta, Canada.

Photographer Edward S. Curtis published โ€œThe North American Indian,โ€ a 20-volume work that took 23 years to complete. It contained 1,500 photographs, a forward by President Teddy Roosevelt, and the first written history for several tribes. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify. "Catch and Saddle Race," 1914. The initial chaos and congestion were captured by M.B. 'Doc' Marcell. Click to enlarge to see the only Native American, a man with his long braid visible below his tall hat at the upper right quadrant.

Contestant #15 wore a flat cap, preferred by immigrants from the British Isles. Some wore Angora chaps. White shirts all, and several with sleeve garters. Most wore heavy-wool California pants; denim was worn by laborers and farmers. Other event photos showed some contestants wearing ties. Cowboys were displaying the same skills they used to retrieve horses from the rope corral at a round-up.

Photographer Doc Marcell had previously worked as a vaudeville entertainer, a traveling con-man, a journalist. Marcell published photo postcards of the Miles City (Montana) Round Up and other rodeos across the Northwest. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

BIG SKY COUNTRY, 1941. The combine was harvesting wheat north of Culbertson, in far northeastern Montana. Yields that year were exceptionally high, about forty bushels per acre. The area was not far from where my grandparents homesteaded.

Female photographer Marion Post Wolcott took the photo while working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) during the Great Depression. During 1935-44, the small group of FSA photographers developed the greatest collection of modern documentary photographs in the world. Wolcottโ€™s view reminded me of the many wheat fields I saw during my youth on the nearly treeless prairies of Eastern Montana. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

"But we have to stick by the wisdom of our ancestors..." --Paula Weasel Head, BLOODโ€“ A long time ago the Elders and our ancestors learned to walk on the Earth and to live in harmony. They were taught the Laws which govern everything, and they were taught traditional values. This wisdom should be made available to the younger generations. We need to speak to the Elders and learn from them. We need to do this so we can pass the knowledge on to our children. My Creator, help me learn the wisdom of my ancestors.

If you don't know what to do about a situation - wait awhile, the answer will come. If weariness overcomes you before you've completed a difficult job, wait awhile, you'll get your second wind. If you do not agree with someone else's philosophy, don't fret, perhaps later you will come to know that the same philosophy can be reached from many different directions. If you think the activities of another person or group are frivolous and unnecessary, wait a bit, they most likely will feel the same way about you sometime. If you don't like what others have to say, wait, they may clarify it - or you may change your mind. If life hasn't dished you unhappiness, wait a bit, if you've planted any happiness seeds, you will also reap. We can't always wait, but sometimes waiting is action, and action of the hardest kind. It is difficult to keep quiet when you have something to say, but it more often saves your face later and sometimes your life.

We are the designers, the engineers, the builders of our lives. But we are notorious for not staying with any one of these things to complete it because we are afraid something is developing in another area that we don't know about. Stick to it. Study it out and get so involved that nothing else can compete in importance. See each detail, measure every idea, refine and improve until you know it like the back of your hand. Be steady and consistent and never count yourself so important that you cannot stand corrected. Albert Einstein put it this way: If A equals success, then the formula is A equals X plus Y and Z, with X being work, Y being play, and Z keeping your mouth shut. ~ For him [the old Indian] to sit upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply and to feel more keenly; he can see more clearly into the mysteries of life. ~

I don't know what time it is, It may be very late, But I have dreams to dream and thoughts to think that simply cannot wait. I don't know what the weather is, it may be sun or snow. But in these books and at this time are things I need to know. I'm not so sure that I'm alone, or if there's someone there; It would be nice to hear a voice, for there is much to share. I don't need to know your faults, they may not be for me. No critic enters in this place, nor do my faults they see, For only One Pure Being knows the time, or shows through your dear face, Only the One Presence fills our hearts to share this quiet place.

A lady of much wisdom has often remarked, "If you want to feel well all the time and feel alive, you have to keep the rhythm in your body." Rhythm, the gentle, easy flow of life. Ordinarily we think of keeping time with music when we think of rhythm. The very idea of allowing one's self the frivolity of feeling rhythm - and such a wonderful idea! There is an underlying rhythm to all of living. Wherever there is life, there is that pulsating rhythm that has everything on the move. There is harmony and there is a subtle smoothness to finding one's own pace. When we get out of step and resist that pace, we have "one of those days" when everything goes wrong. William Shakespeare wrote, "The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; the motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted."
