The First Judicial District held its eighth Fresh Start warrant event, which cleared 99 low-level warrants and connected participants to community resources.

The event provides individuals with an opportunity to resolve outstanding warrants for low-level offenses. The program also connects folks with community resources that help prevent recidivism, such as substance use treatment, housing support, harm reduction services, and transportation assistance.

Stephanie Schwabauer was pregnant and in charge of state testing at New America School–Lakewood when she says her boss, Jon Berninzoni, made a joke that stunned her into silence.

“I told him I was going to give birth right around state testing time,” she recalled. “And he said, ‘Yeah, I could take care of that for you with a wire hanger.’”

Schwabauer said it wasn’t the only time Berninzoni, the charter school’s principal, crossed a line. She claims he created a toxic environment for staff and students, retaliated against teachers who pushed back and targeted those who didn’t fit his mold of who belonged.
