Sweethearts of the Rodeo, 1917 – In this iconic photograph taken at the Miles City (Montana) Round-up, professional cowgirls Clyde Lindsay, Mildred Douglas (Chrisman), and Ruby Dickey (Wilks) stand proudly, showcasing their daring spirit and skill. The image captures them in full rodeo regalia: split skirts, spurs, and stylish boots, while holding quirts and surrounded by a fourth hat, which is presumably that of the photographer, Ralph R. Doubleday. The photo also presents the challenges of photography in that era, with the photographer’s hooded fabric setup allowing him to focus on the subjects.

Mildred Douglas, one of the featured cowgirls, would go on to become a true legend in rodeo history. Known for her exceptional skills as a champion bronc rider, she was the first woman to ride a steer. Her performances with the famous Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Show cemented her reputation as a skilled trick rider and shooter. Her talents even led her to appear in several western films alongside Tom Mix, making her a fixture of both the rodeo and entertainment worlds. Later in life, Mildred ventured into training horses, lions, and leopards for films and circuses, further showcasing her incredible versatility. In 1954, at the age of 59, she pursued a completely different path and became a professional nurse, demonstrating her continued passion for service and learning.

Despite the fame of these women, the details of the photograph and the significance of the event were often overlooked. It is rarely credited with its rightful photographer, Ralph R. Doubleday, or its location in Miles City, Montana. Thanks to the efforts of historians like Gary Coffrin, the photo has been digitally restored, preserving the legacy of these pioneering women of the American West, whose courage and talent helped to reshape the role of women in both rodeo and the entertainment industry.
