New details on the suspect in the homicide of Hilary Engel, 45, of Lakewood.
Karl Aaron Bemish, 51, is currently being held in the Jefferson County jail on suspicion of committing First Degree Murder, after being transported back from Las Animas County. His first court appearance, Jan. 4, was an advisement, where a suspect is advised of their rights and why they are being held. The court ruled that he will be held without bond. He is due back in court on Jan. 8, 2021 at 8 a.m. to be advised of charges that will be filed against him.
According to Las Animas Sheriff, Derek Navarette, Bemish's arrest resulted from a call to perform a welfare check on him at the Days Inn Hotel in Trinidad, where Trinidad police discovered he was wanted on a Jeffco warrant. Navarette said once Bemish was arrested, he was taken to a local healthcare facility for treatment of injuries not related to the arrest, and medically cleared to be held at the Las Animas jail until transfer arrangements, to return him to Jeffco, could be made. Sheriff Navarette said he believed the victim's vehicle had been located in the Days Inn, Trinidad, parking lot at the time of Bemish's arrest.
