What a great day for radio adventure! We started off a little bit early to make sure that we made it to our post in Gordonville in time to start the Grayson County ARES Simplex test. On the way there, we were surprised to be able to listen to and communicate with the Denton county net on a repeater that was over 40 miles away! Knowing our radio capabilities and distances of communication is why it is was so valuable to participate in the Grayson County Simplex net, so reaching Denton was icing on the cake.

The Simplex testing took about 1-1/2 hours with a total of 20 Grayson County amateur radio operators, who were all calling from their own designated location. Wow, what a great experience to see just what our radios capability was. Plus, we had a bonus location at the Gordonville post office, as it was directly across the street from an amazing taco truck, Chente’s Street Tacos ! What a cool guy. If you’re ever passing through Gordonville for any reason, and this taco stand happens to be open, you need to stop!

Finally, Thank you Wade Graves for pulling this together. It was an invaluable experience for ZIP & ZIQ! P.S. Don’t let ZIQ fool you, ZIP did all the radio talking today! 😋

Welcome to ZipZiq Adventures! In 2023, Michael and Tamara decided to get Technician Amateur Radio licenses, so they can start communicating via ham radio. When they received their call signs (KI5ZIP and KI5ZIQ), they immediately heard that ring of connectivity to the radio community and the purposes behind it. This opened a wide door of opportunities as they then connected with first responders, emergency rescue, weather watchers (and storm chasers), along with many engineers and brainiacs around the globe. As the wheels started to turn, adventures did too. Enjoy!
