The United States Navy has completed an in-water testing of an unmanned drone capable of embarking on long-distance undersea mission that will likely change the face of military underwater operations.
The drone, known as Manta Ray Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (UUV), was said to have been built through the US Department of Defence’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) programme and reportedly completed the full-scale testing off the coast of Southern California.
According to the Daily Mail of UK on Thursday, the drone moves through the sea using what was described as ‘efficient, buoyancy-driven gliding’ and would reduce the need for much human involvement in underwater missions.
According to US Defence experts who conducted the mission, the drone is an extra-large glider that will operate long-duration, long-range and payload-capable undersea missions without need for on-site human logistics.

Testing of at-sea hydrodynamic performance, the experts added, included submerged operations using all the drone’s modes of propulsion and steering – buoyancy, propellers and control surfaces.
Dr. Kyle Woerner, DARPA programme manager for Manta Ray, was quoted as saying: “Our successful, full-scale Manta Ray testing validates the vehicle’s readiness to advance towards real-world operations after being rapidly assembled in the field from modular subsections.
The combination of cross-country modular transportation, in-field assembly and subsequent deployment demonstrates a first-of-kind capability for an extra-large UUV.”
According to the report, the drone was built in Maryland before being shipped in subsections to its test location in California, as it was also gathered that its ease of shipment demonstrated the possibility of rapid deployment throughout the world.
“Shipping the large drone directly to its intended area of operation conserves energy that the vehicle would otherwise expend during transit,” Woerner added.

Depending on their size and technological sophistication, the drones can cost as little as $US500 ($770) – a paltry investment for taking out a $US10 million ($15.5 million) Abrams tank. Some of them can carry munitions to boost the impact of their blast, said Reisner. These could be rocket-propelled grenades, he said, or self-forging warheads known as explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, that were widely used in roadside bombs during the Iraq War. Reisner has collected videos of tanks in Ukraine being chased down by the drones or drones flying into their open turrets.
“Welcome to the 21st century – it’s unbelievable, actually,” said Reisner, a historian and former armor reconnaissance officer who oversees Austrian forces’ training at the Theresian Military Academy.

No Easy Way to Defend

In November, within weeks of receiving the Abrams tanks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “It is difficult for me to say that they play the most important role on the battlefield. Their number is very small.”
Some officials and experts believe Ukraine’s commanders had planned to save the Abrams for future offensive operations next year and resisted sending them to the front lines, where they risked losing the few they had. Instead, the tanks deployed early this year with the American-trained and equipped 47th Mechanised Brigade as Ukraine sought but failed to maintain control of Avdiivka, a stronghold in the eastern Donbas area that fell to Russian troops in February.

The wounded have been referred to the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Magen David Adom stated.

14 IDF soldiers were wounded on Wednesday by two Hezbollah drones and two anti-tank missiles at and around a community center in Arab al-Aramshe, a Bedouin village in the northern Galilee.
The village is less than three kilometers from the Lebanese village from which the anti-tank missiles and drones were launched, likely part of why most of the attacks got past Israel's warning systems as well as its air defense systems, though the IDF was still probing the issue.
Also, the IDF is probing why the building materials for the structures which were hurt did not sufficiently protect those inside.
Regarding the 14 soldiers, six are seriously wounded, two moderately wounded, and six more lightly wounded.
The community center was hit by an exploding drone, while another drone did not explode, but still caused harm when it fell.
Reports indicate that four civilians were also wounded in multiple waves of attacks. In addition, a vehicle was hit by an anti-tank missile at the scene, and the wounded were brought to the Galilee Medical Center.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack on Wednesday, saying it launched missiles and drones on an Israeli military facility in Arab al-Aramshe in response to the Israeli killing of Hezbollah members and commanders in Lebanon.
The head of the Bedouin village, Adiv Zaev, said that the village was hit by three projectiles, two of which hit the community center, one directly.
Regarding the presence of residents at the border village, he said that after three months of evacuation, none of the residents were given any financial aid, and as a result, most returned to the village.
Tal Baskas, CEO of the Society for Community Centers, said, "Since the settlement was established, the community center has not been operating according to instructions." He continued, "We have been providing full assistance to residents of communities that have been evacuated, and the activity continues wherever the residents live."
The IDF said after the attack that it had targeted the sites where the drones and missiles were fired from, as well as a building in Ayta ash Shab where Hezbollah terrorists were spotted.
Overnight on Wednesday, two Hezbollah commanders were killed, among them the commander of the coastal region of the terrorist organization, Ismail Yusef Baz, who is equivalent to the rank of an Israeli brigade commander.

The updated version of the SBU Sea Baby drone is a multifunctional platform with the ability to install various weapons modules to destroy enemy targets; in the future, sea drones will be used on all continents in water conditions, the Ukrainian special service said.
"An army of naval drones can effectively fight entire enemy fleets, which cost billions of dollars and for which entire concerns work. Having a hundred or two of these naval drones with the ability to individually adapt them to modern combat scenarios, the enemy fleet can simply be closed in enemy bays," he said in an interview, the video of which was posted on the YouTube channel on Monday, an employee of the military counterintelligence of the SBU with the call sign "Almaz" – the operator of the Sea Baby maritime drone that hit the Crimean Bridge in the summer of 2023.
Speaking about how the recently presented version of Sea Baby 2024 differs, the drone operator said: "The new version is improved in all characteristics – aquadynamic, technological. It (the new version) has the ability to cover more than 1,000 kilometers and deliver more than 1 tonne of payload."
According to him, this is a multifunctional platform with the ability to install various weapons modules to destroy enemy targets. That is, as the SBU military counterintelligence officer noted, Sea Baby is no longer just a kamikaze drone.
The drone operator did not specify what exactly the updated Sea Baby shoots. "I think Ukrainian society will soon see this in the results of our work."
He also said the drone can be self-destructed at any point – destroyed before it falls into the hands of the enemy.
According to the special forces officer, in the future, naval drones will be used on all continents in water conditions, and in modern wars, those who use intelligence and innovation to create modern technological weapons will have an advantage.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, and ICMR join together in this initiative of an aerial healthcare delivery system using drones. The initiative aims to utilise drones for transporting oncopathological samples between peripheral and tertiary care hospitals in Karnataka.
A medical sample using a drone was sent from Dr. TMA Pai Rotary Hospital in Karkala to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal in Udupi district on Wednesday, April 10.
The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) joined together in this initiative of an aerial healthcare delivery system using drones. The first sample was sent from Karkala to Manipal, according to a release from Kasturba Hospital.
The initiative aims to utilise drones for transporting oncopathological samples between peripheral and tertiary care hospitals in Karnataka, the release added.
Meanwhile, an ICMR post in X said: “Next milestone achieved in healthcare delivery via drone! Tissue sample transported mid-surgery from a periperal hospital to advanced pathological testing at teriary setting for deciding if the resected issue is cancerous or not.”
It said that the drone service reduced the travel time between the two towns (Karkala and Manipal) from 60 minutes to 16 minutes (to cover 37 kms).
“Reducing the time from 60 minutes to 16 minutes (37 km), this innovative approach would enable faster decisions during surgery and improved access to high-level healthcare for patients in peripheral hospitals, ” ICMR said in X post.
The Kasturba Hospital release said that the primary objective of this initiative is to assess the feasibility of transferring materials, such as frozen section samples from remote locations to peripheral hospitals using aerial means. This endeavor is expected to enhance the healthcare system by enabling surgeons to perform procedures requiring such investigations in rural areas, it said.
In India, the lack of intraoperative sample transportation from rural areas presents a significant challenge. The drone project explores the feasibility, utility, and cost-effectiveness of drones for this purpose. By leveraging drone technology, samples can be transported swiftly, providing immediate access to advanced diagnostics like frozen sections during surgical procedures. If successful, this research could revolutionise healthcare delivery by establishing connections between remote hospitals and laboratory facilities, thereby facilitating complex surgeries for patients in geographically inaccessible regions, the release added.

An experimental drone has blasted off on its near-supersonic speed test flight, zipping through the sky at speeds of Mach 0.9 – that's 1,111 kilometers (690 miles) per hour.

This is just the beginning of things, though. Venus Aerospace, the company that developed the drone, ultimately wants to achieve speeds of Mach 9, nine times the speed of sound.

On February 24, the 2.4-meter (8-foot) long missile-shaped drone was lifted to an altitude of 3,657 meters (12,000 feet) onboard an aircraft. Upon release, the drone fired up its hydrogen peroxide monopropellant engine at 80 percent thrust so as not to exceed Mach 1, then traveled for 16 kilometers (10 miles).
“Using an air-launched platform and a rocket-with-wing configuration allows us to cheaply and quickly get to the minimum viable test of our RDRE as a hypersonic engine. The team executed with professionalism and has a wealth of data to anchor and tweak for the next flight,” Andrew Duggleby, the CTO & Co-Founder of Venus Aerospace, said in a statement.

Ukraine’s defence ministry believes its naval drones managed to strike the once powerful Russia’s Black Sea Fleet "at a ratio one to 10 in the context of price".

The AI nature of the drones being developed will consist of an image recognition targeting system allowing for the vehicle to reach the target without being fully piloted and making it harder for Russian defence systems to strike them down.
Moreover, the system would allow pilots operating the drones to stay further away from the frontline, according to Kateryna Chernohorenko, Ukraine’s deputy defence minister.

In a groundbreaking move that could redefine fast-food delivery, DoorDash and Alphabet‘s Wing have embarked on a unique partnership to deliver Wendy’s meals with drone technology.
This revolutionary service was launched as a pilot program in Christiansburg, Virginia, right next to the college town Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech, and promises delivery times of under 30 minutes.

“Select local consumers will be able to order eligible menu items from Wendy’s — the pilot’s first restaurant partner — through the DoorDash marketplace and have them delivered via drone,” a DoorDash spokesman told the New York Post.

The Niijima island, a natural phenomenon that abruptly emerged from the ocean less than a year ago, has now vanished, according to the Japanese Coast Guard, underscoring the erratic nature of volcanic activity.
"On Saturday, March 16th, Sea Guardian (observation drone) conducted the volcano observation. Niijima, which was formed by last year's eruption, is almost invisible, and an eruption was confirmed near it. Please be careful of ships sailing nearby." the Japanese Coast Guard said in a statement released on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday.
The disappearance of Niijima Island serves as a poignant reminder of the limited predictability of volcanic eruptions. This development follows a period of intense volcanic activity close to the small island, which emerged from the sea last year.
Niijima Island made headlines worldwide when it appeared off the southern shores of Japan's Iwo Jima in late October 2023, thanks to satellite images captured by NASA/U.S. Geological Survey's Landsat-9, Newsweek reported last year.
Situated approximately a mile off the coast of Iwo Jima, about 750 miles south of Tokyo, the island was initially about 100 meters in diameter, primarily composed of rock blocks without a clear crater topography, as observed from a Mainichi Shimbun aircraft.
The formation of Niijima last year was a spectacular display of nature's force, with the undersea volcano's eruption sending hot magma and rock to the ocean's surface.
