"You can't make a show like All in the Family these days."
That statement has been made by many, feeling that the social climate of these days wouldn't tolerate a show that discusses controversial topics fearing that it would offend one group or another.
Years ago I had the opportunity to meet Norman Lear (creator of All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Maude, Sanford & Son) at his office for a candid 45 conversation. Little did I realize he planted a seed that has since resulted in me sharing my thoughts regarding the political, social and economic landscapes in America.
In 2023 a sitcom started living in my head called "Mi Casa Is Not Your Home" about a Latino family that owns a tequila company. The family consists of a MAGA conservative CEO, his progressive liberal son, and his free spirited brother who sees life through rose colored glasses, a joint on his lips and stays middle of the road regarding his politics.
The supporting casts consists of the family's matriarch who's witty, blunt and uncensored remarks keep the family on their toes. A friend of the family who is a black minister who is the confidant who imparts a little wisdom, while sneaking a drink behind his wife's back.
Thus I embark on the journey to finish the pilot I've written for "Mi Casa Is Not Your Home" to see if that pull I have in my spirit is to accomplish something that they say cannot be done. Norman Lear died a last month at the age of 101, thus I was honored to have had an audience with one of the kings of Hollywood. Thought an ambitious tasks, I must write "Mi Casa Is Not My Home" as a homage to him.
"That's the heart of it: My shows were not that controversial with the American people. They were controversial with the people who think for the American people." ~ Norman Lear
