We'll be contacting candidates for Town offices this week about doing spots for the upcoming election.
As we have done for years we'll be offering to shoot candidate statements of up to five minutes in length at the Town Offices.
Spots are shot in the Selectmen's meeting room. No props are allowed, and candidates are urged to stick to issues rather than personalities. If you are not well known in town this is an ideal opportunity to get better known.

If there is a non-partisan organization interested in hosting a candidates forum we'd be happy to come and video it for later cablecast.

After all the spots are prepared we gather them into a single show for cablecast on Channels 8, 9, and 99. We also place them on our free Video on Demand page on the internet.

Interested candidates can reach me at [email protected]

A couple of important updates:
1.) the aging analog cameras in the Board of Selectmen meeting room are being scrapped and replaced with nonrobotic digital Hi-Definition cameras to increase video quality. We are still a standard definition station, but the picture quality should improve greatly.
2.) we are starting a rolling upgrade of the audio equipment used for the school committee meeting that is resuming at the middle school. We have ordered additional microphones, a larger audio mixer for more mic's and new cables and stands. This will be an interim upgrade. We plan to eventually put high-quality microphones, like those used for the Board of Selectmen, in front of each School Committee member. The middle school library is a daunting environment for audio, but we hope to overcome the worst of the issues.

We've received thousands of request from people asking us to save them from binge watching streaming services ( Ok, one or two). They insist that Horror on Channel 8 is not enough. We've heard your pleas. Starting Tuesday in the 9 PM slot on Channel 9 we'll begin digging into the Shirley Way Back Machine. All the old stuff we've shot over the years that focus on Shirley.

We are also holding in reserve a special collection of old Town Meetings and Selectmen's meetings for those needing a real plunge into nostalgia, but they'll wind up in the midnight to two AM slot. Sometime in early May.

Had enough binge watching of Dr. Who? Netflix just not doing it for you anymore? Channel 8 has the answer. Between 6 and 10 in the evening we'll be programming a wide variety of spook, sci-fi, horror and just plain strange stuff: We got the good stuff - Dungeon Of Dr. Dreck, Midnight Mansion, Spook Show Macabre, Lord Blood Rah...some of it is great, some cheesy, but it'll take back to the good old days when everyone went to the drive in and jumped when the monster howled.
Snacks not included. Sorry we are out of 3-D glasses.

Last night we cablecast the live Board of Selectmen's meeting on channel 99. Last week we did a very brief live Zoning Board of Appeals meeting. For the short term there will be fewer meetings, and fewer still recorded as we work with limited personnel and availability. We have left our live cablecast equipment setup in the Selectmen's meeting room so we can respond quickly to requests from Town officials for live cablecast. We'll update as soon as we have further information.

The current Covid-19 crisis has forced many changes in our lives. One of those is temporary changes in the open meeting law. Many meetings will simply be delayed. But, some most go on.
We have tested our ability to cablecast a live meeting on channel 99 and it works. This will permit everyone to view a live cablecast meeting as it occurs on channel 99. Those who do not have Comcast can also watch live by going to the Shirley Media web site : https://www.shirleytv.org
Once they are at the website they will see at the top of the screen a row of tabs indicating different services and channels. They need too click on the tab that says LIVE. The live tab will show what is streaming at that moment on channel 99 - if a meeting is live it will be shown live. When there is no live cablecast the live tab will just show the replay of the 99 schedule.

Ayer-Shirley Regional School District

March 13, 2020

Dear Ayer Shirley School Community:

First, I want to extend my thanks and appreciation for your patience and understanding during this very challenging time. My decision to open schools today was not only based on waiting for guidance from the Governor, Commissioner, and DPH, but to enable us to bring closure for our students. The State is not issuing a directive for all schools to close. It is a local decision.

The Superintendents in the area have collaborated and have issued a joint statement on school closure. The Ayer Shirley Regional School District will be closed for two weeks from March 16, 2020, through March 27, 2020. Please see announcement below.

Our goal is to prevent a significant loss of learning for students during this time, and we are in the process of coordinating materials and modified lessons to provide continuity of learning for all students in the best way that we can. We will communicate with you on Monday, March 16, 2020, to inform you of available resources and materials for your child.

It may feel like there is no end to this in sight, but it will come to an end.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you again for your patience and support.

Sincerely,
Dr. Malone
Superintendent of Schools

Ayer-Shirley Regional School District

Dear Ayer Shirley School Community:

Effective today, March 12, 2020, I am suspending ALL after-school, evening, and weekend activities and events through Friday, March 27, 2020. This includes after-school clubs, athletic events and practices, PTO events, field trips, concerts, plays, rehearsals, performances, usage of buildings by community groups, mock exams, and any other events taking place in the school buildings outside of normal school hours.

The Commissioner of Education has recommended no out-of-state travel. We do have out- of-state field trips scheduled in May and June, and at this time we are not making final decisions about those trips.

We will reassess after the two-week period and determine if we can resume our after-school activities and reschedule events. This decision has been made in accordance with guidance from the Nashoba Board of Health, the Governor’s declaration of a State of Emergency, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

At this time, we are most fortunate to have no presumptive positive cases in our school district or in our communities. This decision is based on continuing the essential function of ASRSD which is educating our students on a daily basis. This decision is also fundamental to the mitigation of the community spread of COVID-19. Keeping all students and all employees safe and healthy is our first priority.

The custodial personnel are disinfecting the buildings on a daily basis. Much of this work occurs during the evening shift and they cannot keep up with the heavy usage that occurs in the buildings during the afternoon, evenings, and on weekends. There are just not enough hours in each day for them to keep the pace. They have done a terrific job in disinfecting and maintaining the cleanliness in all of the buildings. It needs to be stressed, we have to maintain the essential function of the schools, which is educating our students while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all members of our school community.

Childcare (ACP and Extended Day) for families at Page Hilltop and Lura A. White will continue to be available to families as scheduled.

Tomorrow morning, I will be on a conference call with the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Jeff Riley, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. This is a very fluid and serious situation, and I will keep you updated as new guidance and information becomes available.

This decision has not been taken lightly, but this is the right decision at this time. I want to thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Sincerely,
Dr. Malone
Superintendent of Schools

Later this week we'll be starting a long string of upgrades, first to the programs that run our stations, and then to the systems that run the servers within the station.
During this time there will be service interruptions on the channels and on the Video On Demand server. Some of these will be very brief, but others could be extensive. At the end of the process our system software and all the automation programs will be the newest version . For those of you who have had contact me about shows on the VOD not showing up - we are pretty sure that this will resolve the issue.
We regret any inconvenience this will cause, but at the end of the process everything should operate smoothly . Thanks,
Lou
