Spindrift is Shoreline Community College's student-run — and award-winning — Art and Literary journal. It has a rich history of publishing outstanding student, local and regional art and literature since 1966. Each year, hundreds of student artists and writers submit their work for the chance to be published. The journal is designed and produced by a student team with help from select faculty advi
sors. Once the submission deadline has passed, a jury show of artwork submissions is held. Each selected work of art — illustration, painting, photograph, ceramic — is paired with a literary piece for publication. Once printed, Spindrift is then available to purchase, savor and enjoy! Spindrift has had the honor of placing top in the nation among colleges for many years — 2017 was no different! Spindrift took a number of awards in the CCHA (Community College Humanities Association) competition — SECOND PLACE (National), FIRST PLACE (Pacific-Western). Individual contributors also took awards:
Poems: 2nd Place, "Nocturna A Marzo" — Zoe Gillespie
Photography: Honorable Metion, "COA" — Miles Patton
Song: 1st Place, "Soundtrack 1" — Isaiah Koscho
Song: 2nd Place, "Time" — Carlos Amezcua
Song: 3rd Place, "Clarity" — Mason McGerry
For the student team behind Spindrift, the rewards are many. For example, they get real-world print production experience, the opportunity to work with a wide range of artists and writers as well as a chance to collaborate across campus departments. We're happy to report that many students who've worked on Spindrift are now working for some amazing companies such as the Seattle Times.
