The closure of Victor's Cafeteria in New Iberia a few years back was a huge loss for Louisiana, and I'm thrilled to see it back in action. One of the reasons I love the place so much is its connection to a favorite Louisiana literary character, James Lee Burke's Detective Dave Robicheaux.

Famous fictional detective Dave Robicheaux loved this spot. I found out what all the fuss was about.

This weekend, I've been putting the finishing touches on an upcoming story for Country Roads Magazine about Sugartown, Louisiana's famous watermelons. I just wanted to give a shout-out to Jason Green and the Original Sugartown Watermelon Stand for taking the time out during this busy season to share their history. πŸ‰

If any S&B readers are down around Leesville/DeRidder this summer, check these folks out. They are doing incredible work keeping a hundred-year-old business-and a lot of Louisiana history-alive. It sounds like the stand will be open in late June, but follow their page for updates.

I lived in Round Rock, Texas for a while, recently. While living there, I learned that I absolutely love halal pizza places. πŸ• Specifically, I would always bring home these pies that were a take on chicken tikka masala, which is one of my guilty pleasures. -- in the old location of India's Restaurant near The Cub and Round Bar -- beats the pants off of any version of this pie that I had in Central Texas. It is definitely one of the most unique pizzas in town. Highly recommended if you like big, bold flavors. πŸ‘πŸ‘

As always, the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Provenance Community was a blast. It was a delight to catch Sione Maumalanga manning the lechon. Thank you to El CABO VERDE and everyone who puts on this free event. It's always been good, but today's weather made this an all-time-great Cinco.

Our dream team. πŸŒŸπŸ’«πŸŒŸThese are our pie makers. (L to R) Catherine has been with us off and on since she was 16. She makes the millions of pie shells for the meringue pies. Her mother worked at Lea’s for years. Carolyn has been with us for over 25 years and makes all the pecan, apple, peach, cherry, and bumbleberry. Many of her sisters worked at Lea’s as well. Cheryl is our newest team member and she makes the coconut, lemon, and chocolate. Simply awesome! πŸŽ‰πŸ©·πŸ©·πŸ©·
