He's no Olivier, but he's a decent enough actor and movie star. Also a first class person

This is Matrix movie star Keanu Reeves. He was abandoned by his father at 3 years old and grew up with 3 different stepfathers. He is dyslexic. His dream of becoming a hockey player was shattered by a serious accident. His daughter died at birth. His wife died in a car accident. His best friend, River Phoenix, died of an overdose. His sister battled leukemia.
No bodyguards, no luxury houses. Keanu lives in an ordinary apartment and likes wandering around town and often seen riding a subway in NYC.
When he was filming the movie "The Lake House," he overheard the conversation of two costume assistants, one crying as he would lose his house if he did not pay $20,000 - On the same day, Keanu deposited the necessary amount in his bank account. In his career, he has donated large sums to hospitals including $75 million of his earnings from “The Matrix” to charities.
In 2010, on his birthday, Keanu walked into a bakery & bought a brioche with a single candle, ate it in front of the bakery, and offered coffee to people who stopped to talk to him.
In 1997 some paparazzi found him walking one morning in the company of a homeless man in Los Angeles, listening to him and sharing his life for a few hours.
In life, sometimes the ones most broken from inside are the ones most willing to help others.
This man could buy everything, and instead every day he gets up and chooses one thing that cannot be bought:
👉To be a caring person.😍❤️

I think I have already posted something about this incredibly cool story (my best geezer slang there), but it's incredibly cool enough to deserve another look.

NASA has not always gotten everything right, but that doesn't mean that it has gotten everything wrong. My favorite NASA story is how they spent millions developing pens that astronauts could use in zero gravity. That research has paid off with some (geezer talk again) really cool pens for those of us here on the ground. The Russians gave their guys pencils.

Humans are awesome!

Good news first. Troy was able to recover my hard drive sound files. Lots of work on those and would have been a real pain to recreate. If I had had to do it, I would have done them better than the last time. My production skills are pretty basic, but over time I have grown more adept at the skills that I do have. New files would have benefited from that, but I'm glad that it won't be necessary.

On the downside, a few more weeks of repeats are on the immediate horizon. This week's broadcast will be more cohesive than the show I hammered out at the last-minute last week. I did pull it from last summer, which explains all the surf music during the instrumental breaks. Hopefully, it won't take long to get my database updated enough to start publishing playlists again.

If you are a listener, I appreciate your patience. If you are not, you probably didn't get this far.

I had such a great time listening to and talking with Buddy Flett on-air last night as part of Red River Radio's Spring pledge drive. I hope that the fun all of us were having in the studio was discernible to listeners and that they shared in that fun. Perhaps you were one of them.
The broadcast generated a nice response from listeners who called in with their pledges and comments. One listener said that my contributions over the years remind him of John R. and Hoss Allen, two of the DJs who did so much to popularize R&B music in the 1960s with their broadcasts from clear channel station WLAC in Nashville. The other members of the "50,000 Watt Quartet" were Gene Nobles and Herman Grizzard. In some ways the contributions that these men made, as well as dozens of other DJs around the country, were as significant as those of the artists themselves.
I'm going to claim the hecticness that surrounds any pledge drive as an excuse for my lack of focus. Better than admitting to a bone-headed error. I have not listened to the playback yet, but I'm pretty sure that in my reaction to that gracious compliment, I made it sound as if John R. and the Hossman were one individual. Obviously, they were not.
As for the compliment itself, I am accepting it with the spirit it was offered. It has been very gratifying to have had the opportunity to present the music that I love to listeners who share my passion for it. I hope that I do it well, but these men were the true pioneers.
A few others (off the top of my head) were:
Nat D. Williams (Nat was the first black DJ on Memphis radio and one of the earliest in the country)
Daddy Sears in Atlanta
Poppa Stoppa in New Orleans
The Magnificent Montague in Los Angeles (after participants in the 1965 Watts riots picked up his catch phrase, Burn Baby Burn, he changed it to Learn Baby Learn)
B.B. Davis in Shreveport
As I said, people like these wore the shoes of pioneers. I just try to keep a shine on those shoes.
I am able to do what I do because of Red River Radio's commitment to culturally important music that often gets overlooked in today's society. If you value that and are in a position to support it, you can call 800-552-8502 or go to www.redriverradio.org. The pledge drive still has a couple of days to go, and if you want to make a pledge after that, I promise that it won't be refused. Catch you on the radio ... John

I will be at the Red River Radio studio today to pull a repeat broadcast for this week's shows from the station's archives. Everything is coming together to restore my failed hard drive, but it is going to take some time, as quite a few files will have to be reconstructed individually. This is one of those times that it would be really satisfying to point a finger at someone else and say it's their fault, but this was a combination of bad luck and poor preparation on my part. The important thing is that it is all working out.

If you listen to RRR regularly you are already aware that a pledge drive is underway, which is the way that 56 cents of every dollar of the budget gets raised. It's important to me. If public radio is something that you value, I hope that it's important to you as well.

During pledge drives, the station does some special live events. Tonight between 08:00 PM-10:00 PM guitarist Buddy Flett will be performing on air from the RRR performance room. If you are already aware of Buddy, you know what kind of good time to expect. If you are not, please trust me when I tell you that he is a world class blues musician and songwriter whose impact extends far beyond our listening area. He is also one of the finest people I know. Although he and I are not close friends, I have been blessed to call him a good friend for many years. I'm going to be there. If blues is one of your things, I hope that you will join the party.
I appreciate anyone who shares this message to their own pages. It will let more people know about the broadcast and let them decide if they want to tune in.

Catch you on the radio ... John

No playlists this week. I've been long overdue for a major equipment upgrade in my home studio. Not a huge financial outlay, but enough that I've had to save up for it. Almost there, but a cascading series of technological failures hit first. Last week the hard drive containing most of my sound files crashed. Then my database cratered last night. It all seems to stem from the degrading of a computer that I have pushed several years beyond its expected usefulness.

The sound files can probably be recovered. If not, I'll rerecord them and do it better this time. The database is more problematic. It is pretty much fried. It contains playlists and other show information going back to 2005. Fortunately, I have an old copy on another hard drive, but it will have to be updated before it will be useful. Workable, but I'm not looking forward to all of that data entry.

Perhaps this conveys just how much things are seriously not going my way right now. I called a friend of mine last night who gave me ten minutes to p**s and moan about my bad luck. That will have to be enough. Although my resources are limited, all this could have been avoided with better preparation. Knowing that there is no one else to blame takes all of the joy out of feeling sorry for myself, so I'm going to move on from that.

Truthfully, I have been in much worse situations and so has pretty much everyone else at one time or another. This stuff will all work out, although probably not as smoothly as I would choose. Sometimes it's not a choice.

The ray of sunshine penetrating all of this gloom is that in addition to my own archives (hopefully unavailable only temporarily), Red River Radio keeps their own copies of the shows. I'm going to the studio today to pull something together for this week's broadcast. It's going to take a while to get back to the normal routine, but the shows will not be interrupted. I can't tell you who will be playing, but they will play between 11:00 PM tonight (Friday) and 06:00 AM Saturday morning. Highlights rebroadcast 10:00 PM-12:00 AM Saturday evening.

Here's some lagniappe for anyone still with me. Red River Radio's Spring pledge drive is underway. It's disruptive, but necessary. RRR does use the occasion to present some special live events. Next week (Wednesday, I think) Buddy Flett will be in the studio for conversation and music between 08:00 PM-10:00 PM. It's going to be fun.

Find more information about the pledge drive at redriverradio.org. If you are in a position to, maybe throw a few bucks that way if you have not already. It all helps.

Catch you on the radio .... John
