STEPHEN “STEVE” D. BERRY, 81, of Fairmount, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at home, surrounded by family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda (Piepenbrink) Berry; son, Stephen A. (Jana) Berry; daughter, Suzanne Berry (David) Miller; and two grandchildren. Steve was born on May 9, 1944, to Raymond and Ruth Berry from Catlin. Even as a child, he loved to be outdoors and had fun exploring the town, playing with friends, shooting his slingshot, and tormenting his sister. After graduating, Steve worked at Lauhoff Grain, Co. in Danville before entering apprenticeship training to become a Union electrician. He founded Berry’s Electrical Service, which he owned and operated for 45 years. He was always kind and thoughtful, and towards the end of his career, he often donated his time and expertise, providing electrical service pro bono to the elderly. He was an IBEW Local 538 member for his entire career.
He married Linda Piepenbrink in 1964, and together they shared 61 beautiful years of marriage. They lived in Catlin for 14 years, where they had their two children, before moving out to live by the Salt Fork River near Oakwood. Steve helped build his own house with his friend and local contractor Chuck Vestal. Steve was also very active in the Catlin Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and elder for many years. He and Linda led the church youth group for several years. For decades he took communion to church members who were too ill to attend church. Steve also loved shepherding new church members. Steve was kind and loving and had the heart of a servant in all he did. He easily made friends with people of all ages wherever he went. Many people came to visit and offered to help when Steve became ill, sharing how much they respected Steve and wanted to support him. Steve battled cancer for many years, always with patience and humility, ministering to people wherever he went, and even sharing his faith with his doctors and the nursing and health care staff that cared for him. Steve was a wonderful and compassionate Christian man who made an immeasurable impact on his family, friends, and community.

RUTH EVELYN ROHL HERREN. There are people whose presence makes you feel at home the moment you meet them. Ruth Evelyn Herren was one of those rare people. She carried a warmth and steadiness that wrapped around everyone she welcomed into her life, and once she welcomed you, you belonged, fully, immediately, and without condition. Ruth passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2026, from complications of sarcoma surrounded by family.
Ruth was born on Nov. 30, 1936, at home in Homer, Ill., to Herman Friedrich Hansen Rohl and Inas Lucille Jones Rohl. She grew up on her family’s 160-acre farm near Allerton with her brothers, James and Phillip, learning early the strength, resilience and work ethic that would define her entire life. She attended country school, graduated from ABL High School in 1955, and began her studies in Home Economics at the University of Illinois before ultimately completing her Bachelor of Science at the University of Washington. Ruth went on to become a registered dietitian, serving in hospitals and nursing facilities for many years before shifting into real estate, where she worked until her retirement in 2023.
Ruth lived with a quiet but unmistakable strength. She faced adversity the same way she faced everything else, with humor, grace, and the unshakeable belief that things always work out. She was patriotic, deeply committed to service, and proud of her work with the VFW. She served as Department President for the State of Washington from 1995–1996 and as Emblem State President from 1996–1997. Her dedication was matched only by her kindness, her generosity, and the way she made every room feel lighter just by being in it.
She enjoyed crocheting, skiing, crafts, flying, square dancing, genealogy, ice skating and traveling, but more than anything, she loved her family. She was the center of it, the steady hand, the warm heart, the quiet strength everyone leaned on. Her shoes are impossible to fill. Her example is one we should all strive to follow, knowing full well we will fall short, because she set the bar that high.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Herman Friedrich Hansen Rohl and Inas Lucille Jones Rohl; her husband, Wade Arnold Herren; and her brothers, James Rohl and Philip Rohl. She is survived by Timothy Wise, Valerie Vaclavik, Daniel Wise (Kathey), Michelle Caron (Kevin), Shelly Barone (John); grandchildren, Jason Radloff (Leah), Jill Foster (Stephen), Amy Vaclavik, Beth Wise, Kevin Wise (Mackenzie), Kyle Archer (Sandy), Kory Archer (Kelsea), Keira Lambright (True); and 13 great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose legacy of kindness, strength, humor, and unwavering love will continue to live on through every person she touched.
A celebration of her life was held on March 20 at Atonement Lutheran Church, 6905 172nd St NE, Arlington, WA 98223.
Memorial donations may be made to the VFW National Home or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

Jim was born Jan. 6, 1948, in Shawneetown, Ill., to the late Omar and Maggie Kent Patton.
He was a devoted and loving husband to Shelley Archer Patton for 49 years. Jim and Shelley were married on Dec. 24, 1976, in Allerton and built a life centered on family and commitment. He was a deeply cherished father to Angela “Angie” Patton Yates (Frank), Steven Patton (Angie), Kathryn Patton Lapin (Arthur) and James Clay Patton (Alexandra). He was preceded in death by his son, Cody James Patton. He was also a proud grandfather to Tristan Yates, Anakin “Stone” Yates, Jesse “Cruz” Yates, Makaylia Patton Pray, Colton Patton, and Mary Katherine Patton and three great-grandchildren, all of Alabama. His family was the center of his life, and he took immense pride in each of them. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Joann Patton Mahan and his niece, Ashley Mahan Roper (Justin), and their son Jaxton. He shared a close and meaningful bond with Joann and Ashley, and together they spent many years traveling, creating memories that remained important to him throughout his life. Jim was owner and manager of Sidell Agri-Services, the grain elevator and fertilizer plant in Sidell, where he was known for his strong work ethic and the relationships he built within the community. He approached both his work and his life with integrity, humility, and a genuine care for others. He was a lifetime member of the Sidell Lions Club and also served in the National Guard.
He enjoyed boating, camping and flying, and valued the time spent outdoors with his family. His interest in his work followed him wherever he went, often leading him to drive through grain elevators in every town he drove through, much to the familiar experience of his family. He will be remembered most for his kindness and compassion—for his family, for friends, for strangers, and even for animals. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He lived his life as a true Christian man, quietly walking in faith and leading by example. In his later years, as Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease progressed, he remained steady – meeting each stage with strength, dignity, grace, and a clear appreciation for all those who cared for him. Though he is no longer with us, his presence will live on in the countless memories shared by those who loved him. ANNE M. SHONK, 68, of Georgetown passed away at 3:18 a.m. on Wed., April 8, 2026, at the Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Dear Mama, You have always been my pillar of strength, my confidant, and my first love. Most importantly, you were the one who introduced me to Jesus. Your love for Jesus was evident in everything you did. Our bond was filled with laughter and joy. Your laugh was the most beautiful sound to my ears. When Tom came into our lives we became the three amigos, always inseparable, forming a special connection that will endure. As we continue to walk in faith with Jesus, I find peace that we will be with Jesus and you in eternity. I will always miss you deeply. Our relationship was mother and daughter the best of friends. When something was bothering the other, even if we were apart we would get that feeling that something was wrong with the other one. We were that close. I love you, Mama and you’ll always be my love. Anna M Buyno Shonk, a devoted child of God peacefully joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tues., April 7, 2026. She was born April 11, 1957 and she is survived by her daughter, Annie (Thomas) McCrone; sons, Luke (Kim) Shonk and Gabriel Shonk; and her beloved grandchildren. Though she did not have the chance to see her sons or grandchildren for years, she always held them close in her prayers and love. Her greatest wish was for them to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Mom’s dedication extended beyond her family, as she worked tirelessly at Woodlawn Cemetery and later at Vermilion Grove Cemetery. Her hard work and kindness did not go unnoticed, as many praised her for her exceptional efforts. She had a knack for bringing beauty to forgotten graves and offering prayers for the family of the departed. In her passing, Mama leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. Her impact on those around her will forever be cherished. She will be dearly missed by her many siblings and one extra special sibling, Jerome Buyno with whom she cherished the conversations with. She is preceded in death by her husband, Allen; two grandbabies; her mama and daddy and her fur child, Sadie Sue whom was her special love. Reunited at last! Until we see you again, Mama we will keep loving Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him. We can’t wait to see you again!! Love you, God bless you Mama P.T.L. You’re going to have the best Birthday in Heaven this Saturday! Proverbs 31:25-26
