Wick Appoints Heather Mayer as Publisher of the Nogales International

Mayer joins the Arizona team following her tenure as the Publisher of the Williston Herald and Sidney Herald, where she has served since joining Wick Communications in 2022. During her time in North Dakota and Montana, Mayer established herself as a results-driven leader dedicated to the sustainability of local businesses and the advancement of high-quality community journalism.

"We are confident that Heather is the right leader to carry this tradition forward," said Josh O'Connor, CEO of Wick Communications. "She possesses a sophisticated understanding of revenue optimization and budgeting, paired with a collaborative approach to community relationship building."

Mayer will be taking the helm of a publication with deep roots in the region. Founded in 1925, the Nogales International is the oldest continuously published newspaper in Santa Cruz County and serves as the primary newspaper of record for the Ambos Nogales region. Wick Communications has served as the steward of this legacy since acquiring the paper in 1971.

ARIZONA DAILY SUN - Carol D***s named Flagstaff Citizen of the Year after decades of service in the community

Though the past 35 years may not have been what Carol D***s expected when she returned to Flagstaff, every step of the way brought her closer to what seems to be her true purpose in life.

Initially unfamiliar with the mission of the United Way prior to running her first campaign while working at Aspen Hill Behavioral Health System, D***s’ future crystalized as she soon began to expand her time with the nonprofit organization she eventually served as president and CEO for prior to her retirement in 2023. D***s was introduced to numerous other nonprofits during the years she spent with the United Way, and became familiar with the needs within the Flagstaff community.

NOGALES INTERNATIONAL - Schools stuff bus in Christmas donation drive

Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District's 5th annual Stuff the Bus saw over 580 donations Dec. 6 at Walmart.

SCVUSD staff and students donned Christmas cheer to pull together toy donations that will go to students across the district. Performances from the Mountain View Elementary cheerleaders, the Rio Rico High School HawX Dance Team and RRHS Jazz Band helped lure in passing shoppers, as did appearances from Hawk and Lion mascots.

FRONTIERSMAN - Volunteers wrap up Christmas spirit for a good cause

The holiday season is in full swing, and as the countdown to Christmas begins, many gift-givers are turning their attention to the time-consuming, sometimes frustrating, yet cherished tradition of gift wrapping. Beyond the tinsel and bows, the act of wrapping presents serves as a creative expression and an important part of the overall gifting experience, building anticipation for the lucky recipient.

However, there is help for those gift-givers that may not have time, patience, or the ability to wrap, and as a bonus, can benefit the homeless. It’s all part of “It’s A Wrap” gift wrapping.

GREEN VALLEY NEWS & SUN - The Musquiz family’s annual Christmas display is back for its 20th season, lighting up their Sahuarita neighborhood while collecting donations for the local food bank.

The display features more than 1 million lights and several hand-built structures depicting traditional Christmas scenes. Rudy Musquiz Sr. began the tradition in 1998, with two reindeer decorations. It’s turned into a family effort over the years, with Rudy Musquiz Jr., Quentin Conde and Jose Ramos helping to bring this year’s display to life.

ARIZONA DAILY SUN - NAU and Flagstaff Family Food Center partnering on new food distribution event for Thanksgiving

Around 170 volunteers will be distributing bags with the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in shifts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

The kits prepared for this event are intended to assist those who would like to prepare a holiday meal with their families. FFFC will also continue to provide prepared meals at its warehouse for those who cannot or prefer not to cook -- which it does every day of the year.
