Conviction means standing for what you believe in, even when it’s unpopular.

Wick Communications founder James Wick headed his university newspaper. Just before WWI, he published an editorial opposing the war, a move that sparked an uproar on campus and ultimately cost him his Phi Beta Kappa induction.

But character is also shown through action. When the war arrived, Jim was among the first to volunteer for service.

A century of Wick Communications is rooted in the power of words.

In 1984, Robert Wick and his brother Walter Wick helped establish the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University—a space dedicated to uplifting voices, inspiring creativity, and fostering connection through poetry.

What began as a deeply personal tribute has grown into a nationally recognized program supporting writers, students, and communities across the country.

For 100 years, Wick has believed in the impact of storytelling—whether in print, online, or through poetry—to bring people together and share meaningful experiences.

Celebrating 100 years of Wick Communications means honoring the creativity that shaped its legacy.

Long before digital media, storytelling took many forms—and for Robert Wick, it was sculpture. His intricate botanical works didn’t just capture nature—they reflected a deep appreciation for detail, beauty, and craftsmanship.

That same spirit lives on today in everything Wick Communications creates: thoughtful, intentional, and rooted in community.

From art to journalism, the Wick legacy has always been about shaping stories that last.

We are thrilled to celebrate 100 years of Wick Communications!

Since our founding in 1926, we’ve grown from a single newspaper into a multi-generational legacy dedicated to keeping local communities connected. Looking back at the last century, we are so proud of where we started and where we are going.

The company’s early years were defined by the brothers' tenacious spirit—selling books across the Midwest to fund their education and James’s bold reporting from behind the Iron Curtain, where he famously received a personal telegram from Joseph Stalin. Over the decades, the second generation, Walter and Robert Wick, expanded the footprint from North Carolina to Arizona while championing civic causes, such as funding local polio vaccinations and successfully campaigning to close a polluting copper smelter. Beyond the newsroom, the family’s influence extended into the arts through Robert’s renowned botanical sculptures and the founding of the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University.

Today, under the leadership of CEO Josh O’Connor and President Francis Wick, the company is navigating the digital frontier. By securing Google News Initiative awards for innovative community platforms like NABUR and spearheading AI-driven archive digitization through the Lenfest Institute, Wick Communications continues to honor its century-long commitment to keeping local communities informed and connected.

Thank you to our readers, partners, and communities for a century of trust. We are so excited for the journey ahead. Here’s to the next 100 years.
