FERGUS FALLS DAILY JOURNAL - Out of the water: Paul Shol takes on the race of a lifetime

When one hears the phrase canoe race, the image is most likely of racers in boats gliding across the water’s surface, making a wake behind them. This is not the race Paul Shol is preparing for. In fact, there may not be a paddle in sight when the eager crowd toes the start line and begins on the course.

MONTROSE DAILY PRESS - 'What would it take to write a full-length novel?' Montrose author Diane Winger's journey from writing computer programs to novels

Ellie Dwyer and her best friend Ruth Erlich, two best friends living out their golden years adventuring together, are planning a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro.

With Dwyer in her 60s and Erlich in her 80s, whether the two make it to the top of Africa’s highest peaks is anyone’s guess— including Diane Winger’s, the author writing the friends’ story.

MADISON DAILY LEADER - MAC celebrates the dog days of summer

With the dog days of summer season coming to a close, the Madison Aquatic Center welcomed its furry friends for a special celebration on Aug. 17.

The MAC's annual Dog Days kicked off in 2022, with this year's event seeing 35 dogs of all shapes and sizes splashing about in the hot afternoon. Dogs chased balls, went down slides and even leapt from the diving boards, with members of the Madison High School Key Club, an affiliate of Madison Kiwanis, helping them wash up at the end.

CAPITAL JOURNAL - The Ballad of Ron and Bartholomew: How two 3D printers embody Pierre library’s mission of lifelong learning

Ron and Bartholomew occupy a place of prominence behind the main desk at the Rawlins Library, quiet, diligent and ever-awaiting orders, working without complaint and producing rather marvelous constructions of plastic and filament, producing bookmarks and fidget spinners and even taking custom jobs.

You’d be forgiven if you don’t know their faces, though – because Ron and Bartholomew are not people, but printers, 3-D printers specifically, and they’ve the latest addition to the Rawlins Library’s ever-expanding collection.

WILLISTON HERALD - City of Williston teams with James Memorial Art Center to promote local artists

A rebuild at City Hall has created a new space for the region’s artists to show off their talent in one of the City’s most utilized public spaces.

The John Kautzman Chamber Room at City Hall was renovated earlier this year to create more office space, which in turn left a new blank wall in the room. Rather than purchase generic artwork to display, Communications Director Mitch Melberg contacted the James Memorial Art Center and created a partnership to give local artists another venue to showcase their work. A call for artists was sent out seeking pieces to display in the Chamber Room, which is used for City Commission, School Board and other public meetings.

EASTERN ARIZONA COURIER - Gila Valley residents given a voice in Arts Commission's strategic planning

About 30 Graham County residents met at the Safford City-Graham County Library on Aug. 6 to share their perspectives on the arts and the roles they play in their community.

The exercise was part of a months-long fact-finding mission being undertaken by the Arizona Commission of the Arts. Commission staff have been conducting in-person “listening sessions” across the state since March. The stop in Safford was 18th of 19 on the tour.

NCWLIFE - Wenatchee Valley honors its Purple Heart recipients

Chelan and Douglas County came together Thursday for their second annual Purple Heart Day ceremony, recognizing those in the community who’ve received the military honor for suffering harm in the line of duty.

August 7 is nationally recognized as Purple Heart Day, commemorating the creation of the service award in 1782. It's the second year the two counties, as well as the cities of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee, have joined to celebrate local medal earners. This year the cities of Chelan and Waterville signed on by proclamation as Purple Heart communities.

DELTA COUNTY INDEPENDENT - Local National Night Out event embodies unity, teaches safety and supports community

For many, it felt like the continuation of the Delta County Fair with an emphasis on emergency management, especially as National Night Out was held just two days after the conclusion of the fair and hosted at the Delta County Fairgrounds this year.

But it was much more than just that. All Delta County emergency personnel came together to showcase how they work together as one when necessary, shared safety tips and served the community. Emergency Management was trying to get residents to sign up for free gun safes they received through grants, and personnel were trying to teach young people how to use a fire extinguisher using a simulator.
