Happy 60th Independence- The Cooperative Republic of Guyana 🇬🇾. The flag raising is symbolic.
Before it became known as Fort Island, the island was called Flag Island (Dutch: Vlaggen Eyland or Vlaggeneiland). During the Dutch colonial period, a large flag was flown there to help guide ships navigating the mouth of the Essequibo River long before modern navigation aids or lighthouses existed. The flag served as a crucial landmark for traders, sailors, and colonial vessels entering and leaving the colony.
In 1775, the island's name was changed from Flag Island to Fort Island, largely because of the growing importance of Fort Zeelandia, which had become the administrative and defensive center of the Dutch colony.
What makes this especially interesting is that Fort Island was once the seat of government for the Dutch colonies of Essequibo and Demerara, and today it remains one of the most historically significant locations in Guyana. The island is also home to the historic Court of Policy building, regarded as one of the oldest surviving non-military structures in the country.
