Plans underway to put Robert E. Lee monument back on display.
The American Heritage Association says the Robert E. Lee monument, which was taken down in 2021, will be put back up on public display in Charleston County.
The monument will be re-erected in a “more prominent location within the city of Charleston,” AHA President Brett Barry said in a release Tuesday.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said in 2022 that the monument’s removal violated the state’s Heritage Act.
Charleston County School District officials said in 2021 that the marker was originally erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and placed on the site by Mayor William Morrison in 1948. The marker was placed in storage on July 20, 2021, and the city’s legal team was said to be in discussions with the local chapter of the UDC to find a home for the marker.
The organization has not yet said where the monument will be placed.
