But Spain didn't just build a floating power plant. They built a survival engine for island communities.

It generates 85 megawatts of electricity while floating on high-density polyethylene pontoons designed to flex with Atlantic swells instead of snapping against them. It then uses that clean power to run onboard reverse osmosis, turning the ocean directly beneath it into fresh drinking water.

It produces 15,000 cubic meters of it every single day. That covers 40 percent of Gran Canaria's daily water demand from one footprint. Surplus power travels back to shore via a submarine cable. They are building 12 more by 2029.
