City Opens Branch/Tree Drop Sites for Residential Use

Effective immediately, the City of Sioux Falls opened two branch and tree drop off sites for residents to use following last night’s storm. The sites are located at Chambers Street, near the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility (1015 E. Chambers Street), and Lyon Boulevard (200 Lyon Blvd.), south of the W. H. Lyon Fairgrounds near West 12th Street. These are the same locations as the seasonal drop sites. The sites are open now until Sunday, August 17. Daily hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The sites are free for Sioux Falls residents to use. Only trees and branches will be accepted, no root balls or bags of leaves.

The drop sites are for residential use only. Commercial businesses and/or contractors can take fallen branches and trees to the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill and/or Mueller Pallets, located west of the landfill. 17th HARVEY DUNN PLEIN AIR TO MARK 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF DUNN’S GIFT TO SOUTH DAKOTA

Seventy years ago this summer, thousands came to De Smet to see artist Harvey Dunn’s paintings and illustrations. DeSmet was marking the 70th Old Settlers’ Day and local leaders had convinced nationally known artist Harvey Dunn to show several paintings he had done, inspired by his experiences growing up in Kingsbury County, not far from De Smet.

Dunn agreed to show the art at the Masonic Lodge on Calumet Ave in DeSmet during the town’s weekend celebrations in early June, 1950. However, people kept coming and the exhibition lasted all summer. In the end, Dunn agreed to give the paintings to the people of South Dakota and South Dakota State College (now SDSU) agreed to exhibit them on campus for the public to enjoy. They remain at the South Dakota Art Museum on the SDSU campus. The Harvey Dunn Society and the SD Art Museum have collaborated and will have prints at the Masonic Lodge to re-create what the exhibit would have looked like in the summer of 1950.

Dunn Society President, Janae Harris Bell stated, “We want to highlight Dunn’s gift and hope people can come and appreciate what his work has meant to all of us over the past seven and a half decades.”

This is the 17th Annual “Painting on the Prairie” based in De Smet where artists of all experience levels are welcomed to join this Plein air event. Headquarters this year will be at the Masonic Lodge where the 1950 exhibition took place. Open to the public August 7-9 from 8-5, the lodge will have a display of memorabilia and several reproductions from that original show put together by the Harvey Dunn Society. The SD Art Museum currently has “The Founding Gifts” Exhibition which includes the gifted works from Harvey Dunn at the conclusion of his 1950 showing in De Smet. The SDAM invites all to view these works during a public reception on August 8.

In cooperation with the Plein air event, the SD Art Museum is also offering copyist opportunities. De Smet will host a “Quick Draw” competition, artist demo and youth workshops. The entire community is welcome to an old-fashioned ice cream social and fiddle music on Saturday, August 8 from 1-3 PM. The public is also encouraged to come check out the newly created Plein air art at the Wet Sale and Awards on Sunday the 10th from 11-2. All events are free!

See www.dunnpleinair.com for registration and all the details.
