“People ask me all the time why I’ve stayed at GCI for 44 years. Let me assure you, I haven’t been doing the same job! I’ve been growing — learning, building, mentoring. GCI has never been a place that boxes people in. It’s a company that says yes to ideas and invests in its people. That’s what I want to pass on to the next generation of employees — that your voice matters, your growth matters, and if you’re willing to step up, the opportunity is there.

The thing that’s kept me here all these years is simple: There’s always been a new challenge. Every time I’ve gained experience or skills, there’s been a next step — a way to do more, lead more, help more. I’ve never once felt stagnant. Today, I work as the Sr. Director of Operations Management, where I support our field teams across the state. That includes technical development, process improvements, change management, administrative support, our Rural Site Agent Program, and a group we call Operations Coordination — they’re like the Swiss Army knife of the department. It’s busy, but it’s deeply fulfilling.

I’m most proud of the grassroots teams we’ve built from scratch — like Operations Coordination. We started those efforts with just a few people, trying to bridge gaps and provide support so everyone knew when we brought service into an area, internally and externally. A decade later, this team is thriving and taking on even more responsibility. Watching something grow from a simple idea into a fully developed program that supports customers and employees across Alaska … that’s what keeps me going.”

Tom has been with GCI for over four decades, growing from an entry-level technician in rural Alaska to a key leader in operations. He’s passionate about mentorship, grassroots team building, and making sure the next generation of GCI employees has the same chance to thrive. Outside of work, you’ll find him enjoying the outdoors with his wife and extended family.

In the Golden Heart City of Fairbanks, 8 Star Events Center is redefining what it means to host world-class events in Alaska. Founded less than a year ago by longtime Alaskan and event/AV expert Jon Huff, 8 Star is already making waves with high-capacity hosting, innovative service, and deep community roots.

“I was the AV nerd,” Jon recalls with a smile. “I got into theater as a freshman and started playing around with sound gear at church. I didn’t know what I was doing, but it made my brain light up.” That early curiosity led to a full-blown career in event production and live entertainment — from hip-hop shows and film shoots to large-scale luncheons and military banquets.

8 Star Events Center now features 11 unique spaces, a full catering operation, and the ability to serve up to 900 seated guests — or 10,000 people outdoors once their 11-acre expansion is complete. “We’ve done about 14,000 meals in under a year,” Jon says. “We serve 15-550 people in about 18 minutes — no trays clanking, no food spilling.” And they’re just getting started.

Behind the scenes, GCI technology keeps everything connected. “I have three businesses under my roof, and I need to stay connected whether I’m on vacation, at a trade show, or across town,” Jon explains. From cloud-based booking platforms to digital room layout software, 8 Star runs on strong, high-speed internet. “There are some events where I’ve got three Zoom calls going, I’m streaming to Facebook, YouTube, and a private site — there’s so much stuff happening that we have to have the bandwidth.”

But it’s the personal support that really stands out. “If something breaks down, even at 11 p.m. on a Sunday, I know I can call our GCI rep Josh and we’ll be back up by the morning.” Josh sums it up best: “We’re not a community center — but we’re a building for our community.” And in Fairbanks, that’s exactly what people have been waiting for.

“When I was 16, we had a massive house fire and lost everything. My dad works at GCI, and they let our family live in one of their warehouse apartments for free until we got back on our feet. I’ve never forgotten that. This company takes care of people. That’s what kept me here all these years — the support, the culture, and the way people show up for each other.

GCI has given me a lot … like my husband! He has known my dad longer than he’s known me. They worked in the same office before we ever met. It’s funny how intertwined our lives are through GCI. It’s more than a job. It feels like family. We share stories, help each other out, and support one another both at work and at home.

That kind of connection set the tone for a career now spanning nearly 15 years. I started in retail in 2010, and over time, my career has progressed through different channels. I saw options to grow beyond retail, like the commercial order side and project management. Now that I’m in project management, every day is different. I get to learn a different aspect of my job almost every day or see how someone else’s job connects with mine.”

In nearly 15 years at GCI, Megan has worked her way into her current role as a project manager, overseeing important rural fiber projects. When she’s not working, she enjoys reading, playing video games, traveling and exploring the outdoors with her husband on their e-bikes.

“I first started at GCI in 2010, took a break in 2019 to finish my degree in elementary education, and then returned in 2023 to the role I’m in now. Honestly, what drew me back was the community. When I came back, everyone was so excited. Our team was like, ‘Yes! Sarah is back!’ and it was the best feeling. And even now, no matter what I need, people are willing to jump in and support. That’s just the culture here.

I think having a teaching degree has really helped me continue to succeed at GCI. I’m able to write and communicate in ways that make sense for everyone, no matter the department. Whether it’s notifications or process documents, I always think about how to explain it clearly — just like writing a lesson plan anyone can follow! But what’s really rewarding is knowing customers appreciate that communication and now I get to be the person making that happen. I also love helping plan events and support our internal organizations. At the end of the day, I just want to be known as someone who’s open and helpful. If I can help you, I absolutely will. And if I can’t, I’ll connect you with someone who can. That’s what’s always drawn me to GCI — the people, the culture, and the way we all show up for each other.”

In her 10 years at GCI, Sarah has been a member of several teams in departments across the company and now serves in her current role as a customer experience strategist. She’s the ultimate helper — always ready to jump in, problem-solve, and support her teammates. Outside of work, you can find her gaming (whether it’s PC, console, or board games), making homemade bagels, or spending time with her family or with her cat, Bowser.

“I started at GCI in February of 1999 — 27 years ago. Honestly, I think I can count on two hands the number of days I’ve not looked forward to going to work. I really enjoy what I do and, more importantly, I love the people I work with. GCI has always given me the flexibility I need — whether it’s working remotely in the Lower 48 for a few weeks or making sure I don’t miss the important things at home. In those 27 years, I’ve only missed two events for my kids. I’ve never missed a wedding anniversary, a birthday, or a holiday. That’s a huge part of why I’ve stayed.

What’s always been the most rewarding for me is helping my team succeed. I love seeing people grow. Watching someone come in, maybe a little uncertain, and helping them develop into someone who is confident, capable, and commanding — that’s what motivates me. There are senior directors in this company today who once worked for me and seeing them become the leaders they are now is incredible.

At the end of the day, my hope is always that the people I work with are better off than when we started together — that they’re stronger, more capable, and feel supported. And I hope the customers feel that, too. We’re all here working tirelessly to deliver great experiences, even if we don’t always hit the mark right away. I’ve never met anyone at GCI who doesn’t care about doing right by our customers. The job provides what I need, it supports my family, and I get to work with great people. I love my life. It’s a good life.”

In his 27 years at GCI, Ted has worn a lot of hats and now leads a team of software engineers who help power GCI’s website and other digital platforms. Outside of work, you’ll usually find him playing guitar or piano, hiking, camping with his family, or spending time at his family’s lake house — a tradition that’s been passed down for nearly 100 years. He’s also an avid cook, a pickleball player, and a firm believer in living a life that balances hard work with time spent with the people who matter most.
