The Skagway Fire Department responded to a fire on Ninth Avenue at approximately 4:20 p.m. An accessory dwelling unit had flames coming through the roof. The site is directly next to the spot of a major fire that occurred in February of last year. At approximately 6:30 p.m., fire personnel were seen re-entering the building while water continued to be directed at the unit and the main home. No injuries were reported.

A few weeks ago, I attended the Alaska Press Club Conference in Anchorage. Judy Woodruff from PBS NewsHour spoke about traveling the country, interviewing Americans, trying to understand the reason behind our nation's intense divide. One of her conclusions was that lack of local news contributes to this stratification.

I was privileged to observe Lori Townsend and Liz Ruskin from Alaska Public Media (that's them in the crowd picture, Liz is hidden behind Lori).

And I had a little bit of fun with Haines KHNS correspondent Jen Shelton.

The most important part of the experience was to see how hard the Press Club is working. They are organizing and innovating to improve Alaska's news landscape.
