1996: when the internet made robot noises, and Tom Cruise started running.
Remember 1996?
Getting online did not mean tapping an app. It meant tying up the phone line, waiting on that AOL dial-up screech, and hoping nobody picked up the house phone halfway through.
The internet still felt new. AOL was becoming the front door to a strange new digital world.
And that same year, Mission: Impossible hit theaters. Tom Cruise took off as Ethan Hunt, and nearly 30 years later, that “first mission” turned into an 8-movie franchise.
From dial-up modems to AI, from one spy movie to a Hollywood legacy — 1996 gave us a lot more than we realized at the time.
What do you remember most from 1996: AOL, Mission: Impossible, or something else entirely?
#1996
Small fact-cleanup: AOL did not exactly “start” in 1996; its dial-up era began earlier, but 1996 is a strong nostalgia marker for when online life was becoming mainstream. The first Mission: Impossible film released in 1996, and the eighth film, The Final Reckoning, released in 2025.
