It is with a very heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of a truly special member of our Earth Treasures family.
Shane Holland, who founded this group about 10 years ago, has passed away. Shane was the heart and soul of this community; he was always ready with thoughtful advice and treated every single member like family. He will be deeply missed.
Please join us in honoring his memory and flooding this post with love and memories of Shane.
Thank you, Shane, for everything you poured into this group over the last decade. You will never be forgotten.

~~~~~
Shane Michael Holland passed away with his family by his side on May 22, 2026, at the age of 48. He was born January 15, 1978 in Tucson, AZ, the same year his family moved to Woodland, CA where Shane graduated from Woodland High School in 1996. He then went to UCSB and earned his BA in History in 2002.
Shane met the love of his life, Carla Smith, in 2010 at his brother’s wedding and they became inseparable. In 2013 Shane and Carla moved to Susanville and in April of 2016 were married. Their family grew to four with the births of Charlotte and Evelyn.
Shane’s vast experience in business led him to working in banking, most recently at Plumas Bank where he was the Vice President, Business Advisor/Branch Manager in Susanville. In the community, he was a Rotarian, community activist and trusted advisor.
Shane was passionate about music, art, and, above all, his family. He had a remarkable talent for finding diamonds in the rough—sometimes literally. He curated a popular gem-focused social media community, bringing together people who shared his fascination with gemstones and unique finds. He brought that same enthusiasm to refurbishing Volvos, building another loyal circle of friends who shared his interests.
Shane’s enthusiasm for expertise provided a foundation in which he immersed himself when learning a new hobby. Whatever it was, Shane had done research, watched videos and reached out to the experts in the field. He was an avid hobbyist, a collector of friendships, and a builder of community.
Most importantly, Shane cultivated memories. The moments he cherished most were those spent with his wife and daughters. A glance at his social media page makes that abundantly clear—his love for his girls was woven into every part of his life. They were his greatest pride, his most valuable gemstone, and the center of the life he built.
Shane is survived by wife Carla and daughters Charlotte and Evelyn; mother Rebecca Holland; father Dr. Romie Holland (Jean Kareofelas); brother Ryan Holland (Sue) and their children Audrey, Eli and Grace; step-sisters Sara Lampinen and Merry Cristiani, as well as numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
He was predeceased by Maternal Grandparents David and Aldyth Gragg, Paternal Grandparents Dale and Helen Holland.
Shane will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
Memorial services are planned for:
Woodland June 15th 1 PM at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 432 Cleveland Street
Susanville June 28th 2 PM at Assembly of God 473-465 Richmond Road
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Northern California Cancer Advocates or Little League in memory of Shane Holland.
ROCKHOUND BUCKET LIST‼️
Buckle up—we’re chasing colors! 🌈🚗
If you haven’t been to Wonderstone Mountain near Fallon, NV, you are missing out on a geological masterpiece! We’re talking about the famous Wonderstone Rhyolite, and it is absolutely unreal.
Think vibrant bands of red, orange, purple, brown, and cream all swirled together by ancient volcanic heat. It’s a "welded vitric tuff"—fancy talk for volcanic glass fused together into something truly beautiful. 😍
📍 Where to find it: Just east of Fallon, near the Grimes Point turnoff. It’s an easy stop and 100% worth the detour for any rockhound.
Huge thanks to John Mathias and Shane Holland for sharing these incredible pieces from their personal collections! 📸✨
🌈Check out the rainbow obsidian from Davis Creek!😍These specimens have had their single colors isolated by Rollie Emerson via a process called “spalling” where segments have been broken from larger pieces, which is common practice for lapidary or knapping artistry.
These colors came from a very productive commercial pit that produced world class material.
📣Rockhound roadtrip….side quest‼️
As you plan your trip to the Arizona rainbow petrified forest, make sure to carve out some time to see the wondrous spectacles in the Valley Of Dreams…..🌅
The Valley of Dreams Trailhead in San Juan County, New Mexico, leads to a surreal landscape of hoodoos and eroded rock formations within the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness, known for its otherworldly scenery like the "Alien Throne". It's a remote area requiring a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle for access, with a moderate, unmarked loop hike that is very exposed to the sun, making early morning or late afternoon visits ideal. Navigation is challenging, so downloading an offline map is essential.
