It’s never too late to say thank you.

This past Monday, at the start of our monthly department meeting, a very special “thank you” was finally shared — one the Gordon family had been waiting 54 years to give.

Ex-Chief Thomas D’Arcangelo has served the Central Islip Fire Department for 42 years, but before his time in Central Islip, he was a member of Smithtown Fire Department Engine Company 2. Ex-Chief D’Arcangelo, along with more than 15 members of the Central Islip Fire Department, was invited to what he believed was a routine presentation — unaware of the powerful story that was about to unfold.

Siblings Ken Gordon, John Gordon, and Linda (Gordon) Golden shared a moment from 54 years ago, when they were young children living on Allison Court in Smithtown with their younger brother Bruce Gordon, who was not present. One day, their mother began screaming for help as their father — not yet 40 years old — suddenly stopped breathing. At her direction, the Gordon boys ran outside to wave down the ambulance after calling for help.

Just one minute after calling for help, a car came flying around the corner with a blue light flashing. Behind the wheel was an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter — still in his pajamas.

That young volunteer was Thomas D’Arcangelo.

Ex-Chief D’Arcangelo successfully resuscitated their father, who went on to make a full recovery. He would live another 43 years, passing away at the age of 81.

“He saw all of us have kids. He saw all of us graduate school. He went to every one of our weddings,” said John Gordon. “He changed the course of life for me and my family. I get choked up every time I think about how different life would have been if he wasn’t that 18-year-old kid coming down the road to help my father. There wasn’t a holiday that went by that we didn’t talk about Tommy.”

After 54 years — surrounded by applause and more than a few teary eyes — the Gordon family finally had the chance to say thank you, and share a long-overdue hug with the man who changed their lives forever.

If you’ve ever thought about making a difference in your community, we have a spot for you.

Our friends over at Kings Park Fire Department have been keeping us on our toes the past few days — we’re starting to think they’ve got us on speed dial.

Sunday evening, the Smithtown FD was alerted by to respond to Kings Park as a Rapid Intervention Team for a working structure fire. RIT Engine 4-2-2, along with Chiefs 31 and 33, responded. An aggressive attack quickly knocked the fire down.

At 7:57 AM this morning, Smithtown was alerted again for mutual aid to Kings Park for an involved vehicle fire threatening a house. Crews from Engine 4-1-4 were able to quickly stop the fire, and Smithtown was subsequently cancelled.

All was quiet… briefly. At 11:20 AM, Smithtown FD was activated again for another working structure fire in Kings Park. This time responding as an engine company. Engine 4-2-2 operated on scene along with Chief 30.

Great work by the members of Kings Park FD. Always glad to help and proud to work alongside our mutual aid partners.

🚨 Working Fire – South Pond Lane 🚒

At 12:29 PM, the Smithtown Fire Department was alerted by for a reported garage fire on South Pond Lane in the Hidden Ponds Complex. Due to the volume of calls, auto mutual aid was immediately started from Nesconset Fire Department and Hauppauge Fire Department.

First on scene was Nesconset FD Chief 4-4-33, who reported a working attached garage fire with extension into the residence. Smithtown Chief of Department Dongvort arrived shortly thereafter. Crews from Nesconset Engine 1, Smithtown Engine 5, and Smithtown Engine 4 conducted an aggressive fire attack, successfully stopping the spread to neighboring condo units.

Simultaneously, crews from Smithtown Ladder 7, Rescue 9, and Hauppauge Quint 13 performed aggressive searches for potential victims and checked all attached exposures to ensure the fire had not extended further.

“At the height of the response, approximately 75 volunteer firefighters worked tirelessly to quickly extinguish the fire and successfully contain it to the area of origin. Their dedication, along with the outstanding support from our mutual aid partners—especially the Nesconset Fire Department, who arrived early alongside our ladder company—highlights the strength of our teamwork and commitment to protecting the community.”
— Smithtown Chief of Department Dongvort

Additional Smithtown units on scene included Chief 32, Ambulances 6-4 and 6-5, Medic 81, Fire Police 10, and Utility 11. One resident was evaluated for minor burns.

Members operated on scene for just over 90 minutes, after which the incident was turned over to Smithtown Department of Public Safety Fire Marshals.

We thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance on scene and for providing in-town coverage for any potential additional alarms:
St. James Volunteer Fire Department, Commack Fire Department, Nissequogue Fire Department, Kings Park Fire Department, Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Ronkonkoma Fire Department.

We congratulate one of our own, Dr. Donald G. Lynch, on his retirement as Chief Fire Marshal for the Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.

Throughout his career, Don made a lasting impact on fire safety, education, and emergency management across Suffolk County. His leadership, mentorship, and commitment to innovative programs helped protect our communities and guide future generations.

Closer to home, Don is a proud and active member of the Smithtown Fire Department, serving with Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, where he continues to share his knowledge and experience with our members.

We wish Don all the best in his well-earned retirement — and we’ll see you on our daytime calls 😉

Well, at least the snow looks pretty ❄️

Smithtown FD members are standing by tonight at their fire stations during the snowstorm, ready to respond if needed. Please remember to slow down, give plows and emergency vehicles plenty of room, and stay safe if you have to be out.

At 2:20 PM this afternoon, the Smithtown Fire Department was alerted for a detached garage fire on Stony Hill Path.

Responding units included Engines 2, 3, and 5, Rescue 9, and Utility 11, along with Chiefs 30, 31, and 33. The fire appears to have originated near garbage cans located by the large detached garage. Prior to our arrival, the homeowner was able to extinguish the majority of the fire using a garden hose.

Smithtown FD members performed overhaul operations and thoroughly checked the area to ensure there was no fire extension. Units operated on scene for just over 30 minutes under the command of Chief Dongvort.
