It was a non-stop Sunday evening for the Smithtown Fire Department — not one, but two working fires, including a commercial building fire, and a serious motor vehicle accident in between.
🚒 First Working Fire – 3:57 PM
The evening kicked off when units were alerted by for a vehicle fire in the driveway of a home on Torlen Court. Chiefs and crews from Engine 4 and Ladder 7 were already on the road returning from another alarm and arrived to find a fully involved vehicle fire that had extended to the residence.
A working fire was transmitted, and members operated on scene for nearly two hours with assistance from our mutual aid partners.
🚑 Serious MVA – 6:32 PM
While crews were cleaning up and restocking, tones dropped again — this time for a motor vehicle accident with one person unconscious and trapped and car smoking at Route 347 & Route 111.
Units arrived quickly, extricated the patient, and stabilized all vehicles involved. In total, three patients were assessed and transported to local hospitals.
🔥 Second Working Fire – 8:14 PM
Just as things were settling down, the department was alerted for vehicles on fire inside the building at Mavis Tire on Maple Avenue.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire throughout the structure, prompting a second alarm. An aggressive interior attack was initiated, but when the roof collapsed and structural integrity became compromised, operations transitioned to a defensive attack using multiple tower ladders and large hose lines.
Due to leaking gasoline from one of the vehicles, foam operations were used to fully extinguish the blaze. After over three hours, the fire was placed under control.
All incidents were under the command of Chief of Department Dongvort, and both fires were turned over to Smithtown Department of Public Safety Fire Marshals for investigation.
🙏 A huge thank you to our mutual aid partners for your assistance throughout this extremely busy night — we appreciate the teamwork and hope everyone got a good night’s rest! 😂
