Trump Urges Republicans to Treat Midterms as a Fight for Control of Congress
President Donald Trump placed himself at the center of the Republican Party’s midterm campaign, urging supporters at the GOP’s convention in Dallas to act as if “I’m on the ballot” as he sought to energize the party ahead of November’s elections.
Trump told Republicans, “We’re running together,” and called the upcoming election “the most important election of your lives,” while highlighting his administration’s accomplishments and warning voters about a potential Democratic victory.
He also promised $5,000 direct payments to American adults if Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress, although questions remain about how such payments would be funded and whether the proposal could legally be implemented.
Republican leaders used the convention to frame the election as a choice between the GOP and what they characterized as an increasingly extreme Democratic Party. Trump also strongly defended his administration’s military actions against Iran, arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon justified the campaign despite concerns over rising fuel costs.
With battleground Republicans appearing alongside him in Texas, Trump made clear that he plans to remain heavily involved in the midterm fight and use his influence to rally Republican voters.
